As the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I am deeply concerned about the recent measles outbreak. This situation has escalated rapidly, with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reporting 146 confirmed cases since late January 2025, primarily in the South Plains region. Tragically, this outbreak has claimed the life of a school-aged child, the first measles-related fatality in the United States in over a decade. Vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

Tens of thousands died with, or of, measles annually in 19th Century America. By 1960 --before the vaccine's introduction -- improvements in sanitation and nutrition had eliminated 98% of measles deaths. Good nutrition remains a best defense against most chronic and infectious illnesses. Vitamins A, C, and D, and foods rich in vitamins B12, C, and E should be part of a balanced diet.

It was a big deal for RFK Jr to say people should get the MMR vaccine. It goes against what he’s said for years. Obviously, it would have been better if he hadn’t lied about how to prevent measles (it’s the vaccine, not sanitation or diet). But this seems like a positive development overall

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world.

Medicaid isn’t just numbers—it’s care for children w/ disabilities & rural families. Slashing billions will be catastrophic for child health. At most children's hospitals, ~50% of children receiving care are covered by Medicaid.
