The realisation by my student who has Dyscalculic traits why there is a zero in the number 10.
The expression on their face was priceless, as though…’Now it makes sense’.

Lesson reflection with my student after consolidating the number bonds for 10…

πŸ—£οΈI would like to learn about numbers bigger than 10.
(Absolutely no prompts from me at all. This is 100% pupil voice.)

P.S:I had planned to explore the idea of subtraction next. It will just have to wait.

This is the reaction I got from one of my students today when I showed how to use the algebra tiles from Mathsbot.com for completing the square idea.

Some journeys provide resourcesπŸ€”.

Have a look at the photo. Could you use it to teach a concept/ idea?

If yes, what would it be?
If no, why not?

Ooo..

Sierpinski’s triangle never seizes to amaze the students.

That look πŸ‘€ of amazement.
The jaw drop…
The sheer possibility!

Thank you St. Helen’s School for hosting this morning. It was an absolute pleasure to lead the #Ri_Masterclass.

In #MathsToday from a random pile of counters to an array.

What actually made a difference in counting was the physical touching of the counters with two fingers simultaneously. That slight adaptation provided the connection with the counting in twos, not circling around the groups of two.

Sometimes…
Should really be often…

In this case, it was much needed to use real-life examples to connect with #subitising 4 and 6. As my student was finding it tricky to recall them as fluently as they recall subitising 1, 2, 3 and 5.

In my case a visit to Gingerbread City, London - worth a visit for some creative inspiration.
