When cryo-EM modeling meets structure prediction Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, Published online: 23 January 2026; doi:10.1038/s41594-026-01744-4Accurately interpreting density maps into atomic models is a central yet challenging goal of cryo-EM. Two studies now reveal distinct ways in which protein structure prediction can be incorporated into cryo-EM model building to enable more accurate and robust automated construction of protein atomic models from density maps.

The Diffuse Project The Diffuse Project

What’s the next PDB? Maybe it’s …the PDB.

We just launched @diffuseproject.bsky.social a structural biology initiative exploring protein motion & rethinking how we generate and use experimental data. Quick 🧵👇

We combine all our tech into a data-driven workflow to optimize bespoke sample prep conditions per sample, at minimal additional effort for the user. Our next goal will be to make our system more widely available to everyone. #cryoEM

We show a quantitative approach to cryo-EM sample preparation using high-speed cameras. We quantify ice thickness on *full* atlases in the TEM. We then use ‘manual gradient descent’ to improve our sample preparation method and try all sorts of things. In total, we made 2000 grids for this project!

Time-resolved cryo-EM! We captured the earliest intermediates of homologous recombination in RecA with known lifetimes in milliseconds. We show that trEM can capture an incredible number of transient states, far beyond what we had hoped starting this project. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Very curious as mostly you are quoting the scientists themselves. I can't imagine the hubris to claim that these people's lived experience does not reflect reality?

In 1890, the X and Y chromosomes were discovered. It was found that the men who were tested had 46 chromosomes, including an X and a Y, while women who were tested also had 46 chromosomes, including 2 X chromosomes.
So obviously the conclusion was that the Y chromosome defined masculinity.

I imagine it shifting the boundary between industry projects and academic ones. Academics will just move onto the next problem which we can't brute force. Hopefully this future will accelerate medical research.

It also helps that twitter is objectively bad now with bots and spam taking up 90% of the platform. I've finally had enough.

Sounds terrifying to put a grid full of magnetic beads into an em. :O
