I'm standing in a bush beside a rocky hiking trail, leaning on a small trail sign reading 'Doctor's Cove'. It's sunny in the woods, and I'm wearing a forest green toque, green button up hiking shirt from lululemon, and dark green climbing pants with black knee patches.
I'm standing beside a 10 foot tall tripod made of 2x4s, with a blue chain hoist under it, hauling up a thick limestone gravestone. I'm wearing a khaki hat, blue long-sleeved shirt, and olive green pants. The graveyard is in a lush valley, and the ocean is in the background over the rocks.
Hello everyone, I thought I'd reintroduce myself! πββοΈ
I'm Dr. Robyn Lacy, & I'm a historical + mortuary archaeologist in NL, Canada. I'm an adjunct professor of archaeology, gravestone conservator, & museum educator. I study burials, protective symbols, & colonial spaces! πΊ #archaeology #heritage

Stone circles are mesmerizing, but the real story is often in the dirt around them. πΊ Just like archaeologists in England recently uncovered a richly furnished Anglo-Saxon grave β a 1,400-year-old snapshot of life, love, and belief π glassalmanac.com/archaeologis...

A brown oval stone with orange-yellow highlights reveals an incredibly detailed bust of a woman in profile with somewhat disarrayed and loosely braided hair. She wears a see-through tunic thatβs falling off her shoulder. Difficult to see is the spear that is standing upright in front of her. She could be Diana or Venus, and may or may not be a member of the imperial family (although these intaglios and similar cameos were frequently portraits of the Julio-Claudians and Augustusβ inner circle). Thought to be by the imperial engraver, Solon. British Museum (1954,1106.1)
A ghostly image of a woman with βBotticelliβ hair and a rather revealing outfit appears from the depths of this Roman sardonyx intaglio. She may be Livia, wife of Augustus, or the emperorβs sister, Octavia, perhaps posed as the goddess Venus or Diana. πΊ

πΊ This thread is cute but also so useful to remember what Γtzi teaches us about dynamic temporal lives of prehistoric people: he died on an epic journey, carrying a huge range of kit with tools part-way through being made, and with embers and medicine in anticipation of his next fire, & his future.
How would your TTRPG wizards learn spells if they lived in a society that didn't usually write things down?
I said I'd answer this question on Monday, but then Chronic Illness Happened & here we are.
If you played a wizard in a TTRPG set in late 7th century Pictland, what would your spellbook be?

But a tree isn't limited to how it is useful to humans. Every tree is a home for wildlife, a warrior against climate change, a healer of the earth, a survivor of epochs, a story protector, a kind aunt and uncle, and a food bank for dozens of species in difficult times.

An extremely rare find, it suggests the individual had connections to the sea, perhaps through fishing or trade.

Artist's reconstruction of a Trypillia house from Maidenetske, Ukraine. The interior is constructed on a raised platform. By Susanne Beyer.
The c. 4200-3600 BC Trypillia settlements of Europe were so-called 'mega-sites', having populations of up to 10,000 people.
Evenly-sized houses suggest that they were egalitarian, meaning large populations did not necessarily cause higher inequality.

A tall round jar filled with a pale yellow fluid, slightly murky, containing a human arm from just below the elbow. The hand is at the top of the jar, fingers slightly curled.
This arm was amputated from Antonio Alessandrini in the mid-19thC. He was Professor of Comparative Anatomy in Bologna, and the amputation was a result of an injury during a dissection. The arm was then preserved and displayed in Alessandriniβs own museum. You can see it in the Palazzo Poggi
