A Typology of Australian Terrestrial Bird Communities Aim Holistic measurement of the response of fauna communities to interventions requires suitable community condition metrics. However, the development of such metrics is hindered by the absence of b...

Thrilled to be part of this new study that aims to derive a meaningful classification of distinct and recognisable Australian terrestrial bird communities. Lead by @martinemaron.bsky.social and Hannah Fraser with many other colleagues check it out here.

Crops and chicks grow together in Murray-Darling study on water sharing Can breeding birds and growing rice combine to help both conservation and agriculture in the basin?

Great to get some ABC coverage on my favourite topic - integrating agriculture and conservation - and new paper 😊

Global review of shorebird tracking data to identify research gaps and conservation priorities Tracking has enabled rapid advances in knowledge of the movement behavior and habitat use of shorebirds and is thus making a growing contribution to their conservation. However, realizing the full po...

Tracking has revolutionized the study of migratory birds - shorebirds included! 🐦
In this paper, we explore the global and historical patterns of tracking effort on these birds, and suggests some species that would benefit from future tracking efforts

It’s about finding common ground for water management, integrating agriculture and biodiversity conservation. We focus on the Australasian Bittern, Australian Painted-snipe and Southern Bell Frog, and show how farming and wildlife can be managed concurrently with supportive policy.

Published today in Biological Conservation, we introduce water into the land sparing versus sharing debate, develop novel water sharing policy options for conserving threatened species in the Murray-Darling, and ask people what they think about such amendments.

👀 Here’s the key map from our presentation at the Australasian Ornithological Conference in Perth last week. It shows the long distance movements of Gloria, Marcelina, Knighty, Hope and Thomasina 😊 A strong pattern is emerging that emphasises the value of the Lake Eyre Basin.

Why track waders?
This blog has two aims – to share important scientific and conservation stories revealed through shorebird tracking work and to encourage scientists to make their data available via the Global Wader platform.

Clive comes to us thanks to the Victorian Wader Study Group as a tribute to the late Clive Minton, widely recognised as the ‘grandfather’ of shorebird research in Australia. Inhancer is thanks to Birdlife Australia as a tribute to Ian Hance.

We are absolutely thrilled to introduce Clive and Inhancer, a pair caught yesterday in the Macquarie Marshes and fitted with GPS 4G transmitters from Global Messenger. We are immensely grateful to the local landholders, Leanne, Garry and Jet Hall, who were central in making it happen.

Recent Sightings - Australian Painted Snipe Tracking

After a very quiet six months, we’ve had some terrific sightings roll in the last few days: near Ipswich, QLD, at Shoalhaven Heads & near Taree, NSW. Congrats to everyone on their finds & huge thanks for making sure we don’t miss any records. Keep the them coming! paintedsnipe.com.au/recent-sight...

‘A mythical place’: how a Melbourne sewage farm became a haven for 300 species of birds The abundance of birdlife amid the grassy plains, marshlands and 200 lagoons of the Western Treatment Plant rivals Kakadu – and is a magnet for birdwatchers

The poo ponds at Werribee are a fantastic spot for bird watching. They're not only home to waterbirds, but also to all sorts of grassland and salt marsh species. Haven't been there for ages but I have vivid memories of the incredible diversity.

Check out Coral-Mae's (age 9) felt plover, inspired by the Pacific Golden Plover. This submission comes all the way from The Crags, South Africa! Golden Plover chicks are born in the arctic tundra amongst the thawing ice and thriving plant life looking like moss puffs. #PAD2025
