Check out the robustness screen in the SI too - it nicely illustrates the tolerance that this metal-halogen exchange-type process has towards ketones, nitriles, alkyl halides and more! 💪

This was popular in Japan. Both Itami and Yorimitsu groups had one. Not heard of anyone doing it here in the UK though. Would often take a hit to the yield and requires long machine time to get good separation (>8 hours would be normal). But a saviour when all other purification techniques failed.

A Para‐Selective Kolbe–Schmitt Reaction
Discovered over 150 years ago, the Kolbe–Schmitt carboxylation has established itself as one of the most well-known chemical reactions. However, the process often requires extreme pressures and high ...

Another beautiful day ☀️ Another great lecture
Thank you to Rachel Grainger from Astex Pharmaceuticals for visiting us yesterday. A captivating talk on automation and HTE in medicinal chemistry. Small organic molecules are still big business!

Great to see the group enjoying the Bristol Synthesis Meeting. A true highlight of the year for synthetic/organic chemistry in the UK. Love hearing everyone coming back inspired and motivated. Varinder Aggarwal and the organisers always make this a fantastic event.

To give another sense of the scale of the meeting. The pdf for the whole programme was 1,500 pages. Downloaded it once but never again as it crashed my computer 😅 3/4

The best part is seeing so many PhD and undergraduate students presenting their research. I haven't attended an ACS meeting before but will have to see how that compares some day. Not sure we could achieve something like this in the UK, but would be great if we could. 2/4

Very impressed with the CSJ Annual Meeting. Remarkable organisation. ~4,000 presentations and 6,000 attendees. Every session running to time and well attended. All chemistry disciplines represented and events/childcare for families too. 1/4

I've met many people for the first time during CSJ nenkai. Often this has felt quite formal - exchanging business cards, 🙇. So meeting Fujihara-sensei (Kyoto) and Takeda-sensei
@takephos.bsky.social after they led a science event for families will live long in the memory. Great stuff!

An image showing a stretch of road in Osaka full of cars and some mopeds. High rise buildings flank each side of the road and a train track with trains passing dissects the centre of the road.
Rush hour in Osaka 🚗🚆🛵 Looking forward to the next few days of science at the Chemical Society of Japan Annual Meeting.
