File on 4 Investigates - Bogus self-employment - who pays the price? - BBC Sounds
Why is the rise in bogus self-employment a problem for all of us?
π€ Bogus self-employment costs the UK about Β£8.5bn every year, I told the BBC.
βοΈ This includes Uber, Deliveroo, Oxbridge colleges, construction firms + hair salons writing sham self-employment contracts for their staff.

Excited to see our article published in the Industrial Law Journal!
We argue that, building on the Inter-American Courtβs protective jurisprudence, informal workers in Latin America should be recognised as a vulnerable group, given the structural nature of informality. doi.org/10.1093/indl...

Trump fires US labor board member, hobbling agency amid legal battles
President Donald Trump has removed a Democratic member of the U.S. National Labor Relations Board from office, an unprecedented move that will escalate an ongoing legal battle over the scope of the president's powers to control federal agencies.
Trump fired the NLRB's pro-worker general counsel and its acting chair.
He's effectively gutted the agency tasked with defending the rights of workers to organize.
Guess who has recently filed lawsuits aimed at invalidating the agency altogether?
Amazon and SpaceX.

The question remains: will internal divisions derail this accord, or will we finally see the fruition of negotiations that began formally in 1999? Time will tell - but the potential here is historic. (5/5)

Beyond its economic impact, this agreement includes key sustainability commitments, such as:
- Recognising the Paris Agreement as a cornerstone of the EU-Mercosur relationship.
- Promoting the protection of labor rights aligned with ILO standards. (4/5)

For the EU, however, the path is more complex. The negotiations at the European Council and European Parliament will undoubtedly require careful attention, given the EU's intricate decision-making processes (and the staunch opposition of some countries). (3/5)

On the Mercosur side (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), approval appears relatively straightforward, as national legislatures are likely to endorse the deal - though Argentinaβs case will be worth watching closely. (2/5)

How seasonal pickers can be at risk of exploitation.
I spoke to BBC Farming Today on the Seasonal Worker Visa and exploitation risks for migrant agricultural workers - available from c4.45 minutes in www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... . The visa is restrictive, with a short duration and limits on changing employer, while workers incur significant costs.

The Spanish platform Glovo announces it will now hire its riders as workers. Spanish colleagues can correct me, but I think this results from a clear, simple legal rule and, above all, systematic enforcement by the Labour Inspectorate and other bodies. @luzrodriguez.bsky.social @ibdehere.bsky.social
