As a white guy born in SC, that made me wince.

Also, Lebanese people.

This is actually my read of how it goes down, Rubio's the last man standing and learns that the fractured Trump base won't vote for him because he's a Latino.

Knife missiles for everyone! (this is mostly because "knife missile" is fun to say)

Yeah, this isn't going to play well at the Hague.

It is the nature of small nations and cultures that we are never quite safe. Some degree of this has to be accepted as baseline fact that cannot be mitigated except at intense cost to our own souls.

07.03.2026 00:05 πŸ‘ 36 πŸ” 4 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

I actually understand Israelis almost completely. I just disagree with their conclusions about the nature of the world, what guarantees Jewish safety in it, and, you know, most importantly, whether it is acceptable to inflict pain on others to mitigate your own lack of safety.

we cant keep doing this every single time, im sorry, its just not very practical

like ok i do but you do realise that you are asking folks to prioritise what is essentially a Feelings question over a People Are Dying question

one thing i kinda find frustrating is a certain type of person who doesnt even actually really support the Occupation but will get extremely mad if you in any way say anything about Israel that does not include a disclaimer saying you understand that 2000 years of oppression tends to break brains

As a Christian, I'm a little baffled at how many of your cultural and religious leaders seem to despise you. Why would you even do the job if you hate the people you're serving?

07.03.2026 00:54 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

This is broadly my view. The Occupation is bad for Palestinians materially, and it creates a moral rot in Israel's collective soul.

It also doesn't seem to actively provide true safety either, but that's rather secondary to the ethical and spiritual nightmare.

@starshine.bsky.social, rereading Fire and Blood and wondering, why the fuck do the Targaryen's keep the Celtigars as their treasurers? All they do is suggest highly unpopular taxes and fees.

But this is more an issue of neurotypical people just not having an understanding of neurodivergent anxiety because it's hard to describe, due to a lack of comparison and living with it for so long it normally doesn't bother you.

Santos isn't a sociopath, her capacity for human connection and baseline for stress has just been destroyed by trauma. Ogilvie is a sociopath, though.

I think @kenwhite.bsky.social said 65% don't need the training at all, 20% need to be reminded of what behaviour they think is innocent others would see as threatening and voluntarily join group 1, 10% need to be threatened into knowing how to act right, and the remaining 5% pay his mortgage.

My prediction is that it doesn't get passed because both chambers refuse to pass the other's bill out of spite.

Refresher about Kosa from the wiki. " potentially face challenges in the Supreme Court or in lower courts if passed due to First Amendment violations. Similar state bills in Indiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Utah, were quickly struck down by their respective state courts as unconstitutional. "

AOC openly opposed Age Verification as a whole.

Aside from the most authoritarian corporate Dems, I think they realized the free speech implications of this stuff.

Keep putting pressure, it’s working

ALSO, Evidently, based on what I’ve heard and seen, the Dems seem to generally be starting to Get It. Dems tried to remove the (illegal) amendment that puts a stop-gap on challenges against it for a couple months, they tried to remove the ban on Signal/Telegram type self-deleting messages.

β€œRight, I think it's time to take a step back for a minute.
The KIDS Act is not the worst-case scenario. We hate it for obvious reasons, but given the absolute flood of state age verification laws of late, a federal AV law for adult websites would change very, very little in this country. The regulations on design features for online platforms don't carry any mandates like what ChatControl used to have, and the text of them specifically preempts any interpretation that forces age verification on social media.
Most of what it requires, other than the poisonous idea of age verification, is already done by the great majority of the websites we use. A mandate for "establishing reasonable policies addressing harms to minors" is nothing like a duty of care, especially when the harms listed are HIGHLY illegal things which these websites already moderate. The fact that it mandates functioning user report systems is something I could fully get behind in a bill that was less overly broad.
And no, it has not passed the House. It's not even guaranteed a floor vote. It was reported out of committee.
The amount of time between this stage and a floor vote, if one ever comes, is usually very substantial, meaning we have plenty of time to work. Even worse for it than that, it only made it out of committee along party lines, meaning that it's going to face an almost impossible path in the Senate from the moment it gets there, if it ever even does, and I do mean "if". Thune's reluctance, Cruz's spite, Blumenthal and Blackburn's insistence on something worse, the progressive wing's hostility toward age verification, and Wyden's stubborn use of procedural hurdles almost guarantee a death by a thousand cuts.
Do. Not. Panic. Do not get demoralized, do not let yourselves be defeated in advance, do not fall for doomer misinformation on other subs and YouTube, and do not fucking give up.”
