Hovercraft Calamity: Out of Control Podcast Episode Β· Real Survival Stories Β· 29/01/2026 Β· 47m

On 4th March 1972 my brother and I were onboard the fateful SR.N6 hovercraft service that day between Ryde on the Isle of Wight and Southsea at Portsmouth. This new podcast from Noiser Ltd dramatises our personal experiences. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/r...

I was the Sonar Officer and a watch leader during this operation: Agile Eagle. We were all pretty new to the brave new world of towed array sonars, so Richard Farnfield’s achievement was all the more impressive, and yet he was the most modest of men. A great leader & outstanding submariner. RIP.

It’s a terrific read; makes one want to join up (again).

Excellent book @iainballantyne.bsky.social
Staggering resourcefulness, determination & bravery. I can’t imagine being so inured to death and to the chance of dying while trying to function amid the chaos and fog of war on land. Heroes all. #Arnhem #WW2 #LestWeForget

A slightly grainy colour photograph of the SSK HMS Finwhale (S05) anchored close inshore off the island of Pulau Aur to the east of Malaysia. The high ground of the island lies behind the boat which is viewed from fine on her starboard bow; the photograph was taken from a small boat from a distance of about 100 yards.

My current profile photo: HMS Finwhale (S05) at anchor off Pulau Aur in early 1970. She was part of the 7th Submarine Squadron based in Singapore at the submarine depot ship HMS Forth. I was attached to her in the 2nd half of my Midshipman year and in that time I caught the β€˜submarine bug’.

A monochrome photograph showing the wardroom of HMS Revenge (S27), a Royal Navy SSBN, as viewed from the port side. It shows a table and seating area on the left. In centre view there is a curtained off doorway (to the main 2-deck passageway) and a serving hatch & counter from the wardroom pantry. To the right of shot is the author, the Executive Officer (XO), standing while on the telephone, with the Leading Steward standing behind him facing the passage for the officers’ cabin area.

The wardroom of HMS Revenge (SSBN S27) c1988. Home for several months below the waves on each deterrent patrol (doubled as Damage Control HQ). She was laid down when I was 15; commissioned when I was 19, and I was XO (STBD crew) in my late 30s: she served us all well. β€œOperation Relentless” (CASD)

Excellent. Glad to fill that particular hole, Iain, with this very random first post on Bluesky.

A photograph of a submarine snorting barometer. A dial showing atmospheric pressure in inches with three coloured zones: GREEN 32.4-25.8 inches; YELLOW 25.8-22 inches; RED less than 22 inches. The white needle is resting at 29.3 inches.

IYKYK. A snorting barometer used to monitor atmospheric pressure in RN boats particularly when snorting* (*RN term for snorkelling). GREEN is good; dipping into the YELLOW is okay; constantly in the YELLOW or anytime in the RED β€œStop snorting!” (You should never get into the RED!) #submarines #DBF
