I think a lot of us millennials & older really take it for granted that we were the last of only a couple generations where there was an all-encompassing campaign to encourage literacy. Everyone used to agree upon it. There were commercials with your favorite celebrities just being like, "READ!"

They made educational tv shows and commercials!
Remember when governments used to like people and want to help them??

Messaging guidance:
Stop saying "HCBS." It sounds like a bank that finances arms dealers.
Spell out "home and community based services." Home is a word with positive connotations. Community, likewise, has positive connotations.

Look, if you can explain straight marriage to your kid without the need to discuss the physical mechanics of heterosexual lovemaking, then there’s no need to feel explaining gay marriage demands that type of conversation either.
So what are these people uncomfortable about, really?

The number of steps i have to do consciously to get my hEDS body to function at least somewhat properly that the majority of people's bodies just do automatically is weighing on me tonight. Getting specific muscles to turn on when they're supposed to is my Sisyphus boulder right now. #NEISvoid

(11/11) In this new normal, costs are individually adjusted to a consumer’s maximum threshold and wages to a worker’s minimum floor.
The next time you see a price, know that it may not reflect what the item is worth—but what the algorithm believes *you* are worth.

This Is Your Brain On Uber
This week we feature Keith Chen, a behavioral economist at UCLA and the head of economic research at Uber. Keith explains why surge pricing makes us nuts and discusses our weird economic choices.
(6/11) Uber tracks battery life. Former exec Keith Chen noted in 2016 that users with low battery are statistically more likely to accept surge pricing. Uber says it doesn’t use that data to set prices, but the correlation remains a point of regulatory scrutiny. www.npr.org/transcripts/...

(2/11) You know dynamic pricing—think Uber rides, flights, or concert tickets that surge based on supply and demand. “Surveillance Pricing” takes this to the next level: using your data to set a “price for you” based on your predicted breaking point. This is, increasingly, everywhere.

(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

Gen Z men want kids. Gen Z women have questions.
the only surprising thing about parenthood appealing more to the gender less likely to be actually giving birth is that men scammed the world successfully enough that people are still surprised by it

Hawaii SB2761 | 2026 | Regular Session
Summary (2026-03-06) Relating To Social Media. [48 Hrs. Notice 03-10-26.]
Hawaii: you're up. Call your House representatives and tell them to oppose SB 2761, which is heading to the House from the Senate: it's a total ban on social media for under-16s, not made any better by the obvious typo in the effective date of 2077. legiscan.com/HI/bill/SB27...

An Argument Against Voting for the “Electable” Guy
In this week’s Elie v. US, The Nation’s justice correspondent shares his thoughts on the Texas primaries. Plus, a terrible Supreme Court decision and a bad play by Major League Baseball.
In this week’s newsletter, I look forward to “Beto O’Rourke 2” while also explaining why SCOTUS ruled 9-0 to send an immigrant back to a hitman.
I also complain about the modernization of baseball because I’m old.

Long-term treatment of ADHD requires self-acceptance.
Specifically, we need to understand we're starting at different place than others and have different needs and barriers.
This changes what we need to do to improve and progress. It doesn't make progress or success impossible though

Patreon post header graphic for "Shouldn't Need to Be a Lawyer" by Matthew Cortland, dated 03/04/2026. Title reads: "Steven Pinker Helped Epstein's Lawyers Argue Sex Trafficking Wasn't Sex Trafficking. The NYT Just Gave Him a Platform to Argue Disability Isn't Disability."
In 2007, Steven Pinker argued that "entice" didn't mean entice, to defend child rapist Jeffrey Epstein. In 2026, he's arguing that "disability" doesn't mean disability, and the New York Times is letting him do it without mentioning his history.

Fatigue feels like you have sandbags tied to your feet while trying to walk. It feels like you haven’t slept in weeks. It feels like gravity is pulling you down. It feels like cotton balls are in your head, clouding everything.
Fatigue is NOT the equivalent to being tired.
