Pioneer and Altimeter: Fast Analysis of DIA Proteomics Data Optimized for Narrow Isolation Windows Advances in mass spectrometry have enabled increasingly fast data-independent acquisition (DIA) experiments, producing datasets whose scale and complexity challenge existing analysis tools. Those same advances have also led to the use of narrow isolation windows, which alter MS2 spectra via fragment isotope effects and give rise to systematic deviations from spectral libraries. Here we introduce Pioneer and Altimeter, open-source tools for fast DIA analysis with explicit modeling of isolation-window effects. Altimeter predicts deisotoped fragment intensity as a continuous function of collision energy, allowing a single spectral library to be reused across datasets. Pioneer re-isotopes predicted spectra per scan and combines an intensity-aware fragment index, spectral deconvolution, and dual-window quantification for fast, spectrum-centric DIA analysis. Across instruments, experimental designs, and sample inputs, Pioneer enables high-confidence identification and precise quantification at scale, completing analyses 2-6x faster and maintaining conservative false-discovery rate control.

@asms.org has sent out ballots for the BOD election. There is a strong slate of candidates this year. I know from other organizations only 20-25% of the membership vote in society elections so make your voice heard & vote. It took me 15 seconds to vote. I’m asking for your vote as VP for Programs.

Infographic titled β€œWhat makes skunk spray stink?” It explains that thiol compounds cause the odor. Earlier research misidentified 1-butanethiol, but two major thiols were later confirmed: (E)-2-butene-1-thiol (38–40% of volatiles) and 3-methyl-1-butanethiol (18–26%). It also notes the presence of thioacetates and quinolines. A central image shows a skunk. A section describes why the smell worsens with water: thioacetates convert to thiols when wet. Another section explains odor removal: tomato juice is ineffective; a mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish detergent oxidizes thiols to odorless sulfonic acids. It also mentions pericosine A, a compound that forms odorless thioethers with thiols.

Infographic titled β€œThe chemistry of baking bread,” explaining how four main ingredientsβ€”flour, water, yeast, and saltβ€”interact during the steps of mixing, kneading, fermenting, and baking. On the left is an image of sliced baguettes.
Sections:
Flour, water, and salt: Shows proteins glutenin and gliadin forming gluten when mixed with water. Notes that kneading strengthens the viscoelastic gluten network that traps gas. Explains flour’s protein content, how water hydrates proteins, and how salt adds flavor, slows fermentation, strengthens gluten, and improves elasticity.
Starch and sugar: Illustrates starch as long chains of sugar molecules. Enzymes in flour convert starch to maltose, and yeast converts sugars like glucose for fermentation. Explains that sugar contributes to browning and flavor.
Yeast and fermentation: Shows yeast converting glucose into carbon dioxide (which makes dough rise) and ethanol (which evaporates during baking). Describes yeast as single-celled fungi producing gas bubbles that expand the dough; kneading distributes bubbles. Includes sourdough information showing a 100:1 ratio of bacteria to yeast and the role of lactic acid in flavor.
Other ingredients: Includes fats (which tenderize dough and stabilize gas bubbles), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), baking powder (sodium bicarbonate plus cream of tartar), ascorbic acid (strengthens gluten), and xanthan gum (used in gluten-free breads).
