We are thrilled to announce our 2026 election results. Olga Vitek has been elected to serve as US HUPO's President-Elect, Devin Schweppe as Secretary, and Sasha Singh and Hanno Steen were elected to serve as Members-At-Large on our Board of Directors. Congratulations to all! π #USHUPO
@asms.org has sent out ballots for the BOD election. There is a strong slate of candidates this year. I know from other organizations only 20-25% of the membership vote in society elections so make your voice heard & vote. It took me 15 seconds to vote. Iβm asking for your vote as VP for Programs.
I am looking for a PostDoc to join my group at Genentech to drive the development of proteomics technologies to fuel target and therapeutic discovery and development. Check out the link below!

Infographic titled βWhat makes skunk spray stink?β It explains that thiol compounds cause the odor. Earlier research misidentified 1-butanethiol, but two major thiols were later confirmed: (E)-2-butene-1-thiol (38β40% of volatiles) and 3-methyl-1-butanethiol (18β26%). It also notes the presence of thioacetates and quinolines. A central image shows a skunk. A section describes why the smell worsens with water: thioacetates convert to thiols when wet. Another section explains odor removal: tomato juice is ineffective; a mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish detergent oxidizes thiols to odorless sulfonic acids. It also mentions pericosine A, a compound that forms odorless thioethers with thiols.
Why does skunk spray smell so bad, and what are some science-backed methods for removing the stench? The latest edition of #PeriodicGraphics in @cenmag.bsky.social takes a look: cen.acs.org/biological-c...

Infographic titled βThe chemistry of baking bread,β explaining how four main ingredientsβflour, water, yeast, and saltβinteract during the steps of mixing, kneading, fermenting, and baking. On the left is an image of sliced baguettes. Sections: Flour, water, and salt: Shows proteins glutenin and gliadin forming gluten when mixed with water. Notes that kneading strengthens the viscoelastic gluten network that traps gas. Explains flourβs protein content, how water hydrates proteins, and how salt adds flavor, slows fermentation, strengthens gluten, and improves elasticity. Starch and sugar: Illustrates starch as long chains of sugar molecules. Enzymes in flour convert starch to maltose, and yeast converts sugars like glucose for fermentation. Explains that sugar contributes to browning and flavor. Yeast and fermentation: Shows yeast converting glucose into carbon dioxide (which makes dough rise) and ethanol (which evaporates during baking). Describes yeast as single-celled fungi producing gas bubbles that expand the dough; kneading distributes bubbles. Includes sourdough information showing a 100:1 ratio of bacteria to yeast and the role of lactic acid in flavor. Other ingredients: Includes fats (which tenderize dough and stabilize gas bubbles), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), baking powder (sodium bicarbonate plus cream of tartar), ascorbic acid (strengthens gluten), and xanthan gum (used in gluten-free breads).
