My aim is to connect stories, records, and landscapes with collections at The National Archives, through a mix of embodied research (walking!) and catalogue exploration.
Iβm also interested in novels, memoirs, travel writing, and landscape literature set in or inspired by these locations.
Getting ready for two Archive Rambles this April:
πΊοΈ North Devon: Lynton to Woolacombe
π₯Ύ Yorkshire Dales: Skipton to Sedbergh
Iβm looking for local archive collections related to these areas, or material documenting the long-distance paths that connect them.

A 1914 competition map: Changing the map of Europe
8 years ago, at the British Library, I first saw this map: an FT reader competition to predict the boundaries of Europe after WW1. I made a note to find out more one day - which ultimately led me last month to this tomb in West Norwood cemetery. You can read more here: www.ft.com/content/79a4...
`I love this #accidentaljourney thread, so eye-opening and embodied. Look forward to reading more. When I worked for the Living with Machines project I briefly collaborated with colleagues on a project on "railspace": www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTgN...
Makes me think about interesting connections...
In general, I'd like to connect to people/researcher interested in walking as a creative research methodology to share insights, reflections, ideas. Perhaps "here"'s a good place to start?
Same! I am interested in walking as a potential (spatial) methodology (waymarking system?) to engender spontaneous archival encounters in a regimented (impenetrable/disorienting) catalogue system (e.g. state archive). I'd like to 1) gather a bibliography/projects/examples 2)reflect 3)practice
I didn't know you were from Devon, Brad! So many coincidences.
I really appreciate reading your reflections on walking as a research methodology. I did write about it, though from a different angle (archival research), here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/professional...
Would love to discuss more. Perhaps engage in a "methodological conversation"?

How can archival research deepen the experience of hiking, and vice versa?
My first "Archive Rambler" blog on walking along the South West Coast Path & researching The National Archives records is out now.

Looking for info on the British photographer John Dixon-Scott. Anything that could help pin down and his life and (many) projects) is all very welcome!
The National Archives hold a huge collection of photographs and I am keen on studying it more deeply.
For World Aids Day, 1 December, Iβve co-curated a new highlights gallery exploring @nationalarchives.gov.uk.web.brid.gy state records collection related to the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s.

Great progress by @mrcwarwick.bsky.social in its three-year project to index the archives of the National Union of Mineworkers and predecessor unions. A dozen catalogues online and more to come. Project archivist @worsted.bsky.social deserves a medal!
