On this date in 1890, Harvard Law Review published "The Right to Privacy" by Louis Brandeis and Samuel D. Warren. I wonder if written today, instead of asserting "the right to be let alone," it would just be able to muster a case for "the right to whistle in the wind."

Privacy lawyer Albert Gidari digs into the mysterious, bootlegging past of Roy and Elise Olmstead
UW Magazine | University of Washington
Thanks to UW Magazine for covering my book about Elise Olmstead, Seattle's so-called Queen of the Bootleggers. The 100th anniversary of the Nation's first wiretap trial in a few weeks away and Elise was the only woman on trial with Roy and 90 of his cohorts!

And PS, if the newspaper owner has a certain political view, well, you can guess which crimes or accusations would be "forgotten" or forgiven.

Am I reading this wrong? This isn't just de-indexing but removing the actual article from the newspaper? What about searches via Lib of Congress, NARA, ProQuest, Newspapers dot com and other for profit newspaper and genealogy search platforms? Never expected it from newspapers.

4/ There were some disappointing reads for me this year too, but kudos to every author who tried! You can find my complete reading list for 2024 (and before) on
Goodreads or message me for the complete list of 34 books if you are interested.

3/ Favorite work of fiction was "West with Giraffes," by
Lynda Rutledge, a work of fiction based on the true story of the journey of two giraffes transported across America during the Depression to the San Diego Zoo. Sometimes you just need a book that makes you feel good.

2/ By far, my favorite nonfiction book of the year was "The Demon of Unrest," by @exlarson, about the critical five months between Lincoln’s election and the start of the Civil War. The book leaves you with an uneasy feeling that history is repeating itself today.

1/ Annual Reading Roundup: I read 12 fewer books in 2024 than last year–34 in all. But in fairness, I also wrote and published a book: Elise Olmstead: The Myth and Mystery of Seattle’s “Queen of the Bootleggers,” which you can get here: <https://amazon.com/dp/B0DN16M3MH>

On this date in 1890, the Harvard Law Review published "The Right to Privacy" by Brandeis & Warren. It was 7222 words long, but this short phrase by Brandeis summarized the point of the article to perfection: privacy is the right "to be let alone."
