Important to understand first: When your body is exposed to certain germs that can cause diseases, your immune system builds a “memory” of them, so if you’re exposed to these germs again, your immune system recognizes them and knows how to fight them off. Your immune system also builds this memory when you get vaccinated, so you don’t have to get sick in order to protect yourself from future infections.

Measles can cause your immune system to forget up to 73% of its memory. In other words, after having measles, you will be immune to measles, but may be at increased
risk of other serious illnesses. Did you know? Measles is not the only virus that can harm your immune system. COVID-19 has also been found to cause long-term harm to your body’s ability to fight off illnesses, making you more likely to get sick and experience severe illness.”

Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict whose immune system will be most harmed by being sick. It can happen to anyone! The best way to avoid immune amnesia is to get vaccinated & take other steps to avoid getting sick So please remember, it is not a good idea to expose
yourself to these viruses on purpose in order to build
immunity! That is what vaccines are for. Getting sick makes you much more likely to hurt your immune system! Graphics of a vaccine, a mask, and an air purifier and open window symbolizing clean air

Why does my child still need to be vaccinated for diseases that hardly anyone gets these days? Vaccines are the reason that some diseases are now rare, but when people stop getting vaccinated, these diseases come back. Measles, for example, was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000 thanks to vaccines, but as vaccination rates have decreased, measles cases have increased. In 2025, the U.S. experienced its largest measles outbreak in decades, and we are already on track to have even more cases this year. Only 7%* of these cases are people who have had at least one measles vaccine dose. If more people were vaccinated, fewer would get sick, and these diseases would not be able to spread. Getting your child vaccinated keeps diseases from coming back and helps protect your child if outbreaks do occur.

That disease isn’t even that serious. Everyone I know survived. Is vaccination really that important? Every vaccine-preventable illness can be serious. Children die from the flu, whooping cough, measles, and more, even if they previously had no other health conditions, and these deaths are much more common among children who are unvaccinated. In the 2024-2025 flu season, for example, almost 90% of children who died from the flu were not fully vaccinated. Additionally, death is not the only possible consequence of many vaccine-preventable illnesses. Measles, for example, can cause brain swelling that leads to deafness, intellectual disabilities, and more. And remember, thousands of children lost their lives to preventable illnesses each year before vaccines were developed, but it is harder to know about them than our friends and family still with us because they were fortunate to survive. This makes it seem like all people survive certain illnesses, but that is not true.

Can I still choose to get my child vaccinated even if the vaccine schedule has changed? Yes. Vaccines continue to be available and important to protect your child’s short-term and long-term health. It is important not to delay or skip vaccination, as this exposes your child to unnecessary risk. Getting your child vaccinated on time is the best way to protect their lifelong health.

Why has the childhood vaccine schedule (immunization schedule) changed? Has disease risk or vaccine safety changed? No, there is no new information and no changes in vaccine safety or risk of diseases. Vaccines continue to be the best way to protect your children from several illnesses, including illnesses that can cause long-term health damage, disability, and death. Delaying or skipping vaccination increases your child’s risk of illness and contributes to more viruses spreading in the community. Medical groups endorse the American Academy of Pediatrics Immunization Schedule, which includes vaccines removed from the federal schedule.

Why does my child need vaccines even if they can still get sick after getting vaccinated? Although no vaccine will prevent 100% of infections, vaccines significantly reduce your child’s risk of getting sick or experiencing severe illness if they do get sick. For example, 93% of people who had measles in 2025 had no confirmed measles vaccinations. In the 2024-2025 flu season, almost 90% of children who died from the flu were not fully vaccinated. Vaccines are an essential tool for protecting your child from deadly preventable illnesses.

I heard vaccines have side effects. Why should I risk it? All vaccines and medications can have side effects, but vaccine side effects are almost always mild and go away within a few days. Your child is significantly more likely to experience serious illness or death from preventable illnesses than from vaccines. When choosing between getting vaccinated or risking illness, it is dangerous to choose the option that is significantly more likely to hurt your child. Vaccines are thoroughly tested for safety and serious side effects are extremely rare. Vaccines are the best choice to keep your child safe and alive.

If your vaccine protects your child, why do you care if my child is also vaccinated? Everyone who chooses to get vaccinated protects themselves and the people around them. Some people are unable to be vaccinated because they are too young, have certain medical conditions, are pregnant (some vaccines are safe to receive during pregnancy, and some are not), or other reasons, and they rely on the people around them staying healthy in order for them to stay healthy as well. In 2025, a child died from SSPE, a fatal brain disease that develops as a result of having measles. This child was infected with measles when they were still too young to be vaccinated. Getting vaccinated protects children like this, and it also contributes to herd immunity, meaning that when more people are vaccinated, the virus has fewer chances to spread, and outbreaks like the 2025 measles outbreak do not occur.

Do You Need a
Measles Vaccine (MMR)? If you were born before 1957. Because measles was so widespread at this time, it’s assumed that people born before 1957 already have immunity to measles from a previous infection, but talk to your doctor if you have concerns. If you were born between 1957-1967 and got vaccinated before 1968. You may have received a weaker version of the vaccine and may not be protected. Talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated again. All others* Children: Children should receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. The first should generally be given at age 12-15 months, but babies as young as 6 months can be vaccinated during outbreaks or before international travel. The second dose should be given at age 4-6 years. If your child has not been vaccinated, get them up to date as soon as possible. . Adults: Most adults are considered immune if they’ve received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine (vaccinated in 1968 or later), but it is a good idea to receive a second dose for extra protection during outbreaks. Some people – like international travelers, college students, and healthcare workers – are recommended to get two doses for measles protection, even when there is not an outbreak. If you have not been vaccinated, talk to your doctor to get at least one dose of the MMR vaccine. Talk to your doctor about having your immunity checked, or get vaccinated now. There is no harm in getting vaccinated again if you might already have immunity. If you’ve already had measles, you are considered immune, no matter your age or vaccination status. *Some people, including those who are pregnant or severely immunocompromised, should not receive an MMR vaccine. This is uncommon, so talk to your doctor if you’re unsure if it applies to you.

Do You Need a Measles Vaccine (MMR)? If your child has not been vaccinated, get them up to date as soon as possible. .

How do babies get hepatitis B? Hepatitis B spreads to babies by mothers who pass it to their babies while giving birth and by other people in close contact with them, like other family members or caregivers. Vaccination beginning within 24 hours of birth keeps babies from developing hepatitis B from either of these risks.

Vaccination beginning within 24 hours of birth keeps babies from developing hepatitis B from either of these risks.

Why do all babies need vaccination? Why not just vaccinate babies whose mothers test positive for hepatitis B?

Because babies are often infected by people other than their mothers, like caregivers and other family members, and many of them do not know they are infected.

Because not all mothers are tested. Testing is already recommended for all people during pregnancy, but still up to 18% of pregnant people do not get tested. Did you know? Before vaccination was recommended for all babies beginning in 1991, vaccination was only recommended for babies considered high risk, like those whose mothers tested positive. Too many babies were still becoming infected, so the recommendation was expanded to include all babies, and infections in babies have decreased 99% since then.

Why can’t I just protect my baby by keeping them away from people with hepatitis B? About 1 in 2 people infected with hepatitis B do not know they are infected. This puts babies at risk, as babies are often infected in their first year of life by caregivers or family members, and many do not know they are infected.

Can I wait until my baby is older to get them vaccinated? Can I wait until my baby is older to get them vaccinated? Babies infected at birth or within the first year of life have a 90% chance of developing chronic hepatitis B. Chronic hepatitis B can cause liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and more, and 1 in 4 who develop chronic hepatitis B will die from the disease. Getting babies vaccinated, beginning within 24 hours of birth, prevents infection at birth or in their first year of life. Delaying vaccination increases their risk of lifelong illness.

A picture of a boy with a red rash, a thermometer, and a box of tissues. Text says: Symptoms usually appear 7-14 days after being exposed to the virus but can take up to 21 days to appear. First symptoms:
High fever (may reach more than 104°F)
Cough
Runny nose
Red, watery eyes. 2-3 days after symptoms appear: Koplik spots (tiny white spots) in mouth. 3-5 days after symptoms begin: Rash: flat, red spots (may appear less red on darker skin tones)

Usually appears first on the face at the hairline then spreads downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.

Small raised bumps may appear on top of the flat red spots. Not everyone will have every symptom! If you think you or your child may have measles, call your doctor before visiting in person to avoid spreading it to others!
