How delightfully quaint some of these old Devon village names are, their etymologies lost in the mists of time.
It is with immense sadness I have to tell you my amazing wife Karen died on Friday after suffering an aneurysm just before Christmas. I know some of you will have got to know her over the years. She was endlessly kind, wise and just such fun to be with. I am incredibly lucky to have shared her time. You will forgive me if I don't reply.

This is a bit of a quietly momentous post for me. If you saw my recent posts on here you will know my family and I have been going through a very challenging time. But I know that humour will be my way through it and so I’ve decided to post my nonsense again.

A few of you have noticed my absence here over the last few weeks and expressed their concern (thank you for that). I’ve been waiting for the right time to explain what’s happened and I think now is appropriate. Just before Christmas my wife Karen had an aneurysm while looking after her mum. She has since been at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. They have managed to stabilise her but she remains unconscious. We learnt yesterday that the damage to her brain is too extensive for her ever to recover. We are devastated. I know that some of you have met or interacted with Karen over the years and know what wonderful person she is. I thank you in advance for your kind words. Please forgive me for not replying x
