Just submitted the full manuscript for that book I keep posting about, Masquing Blackness in The Tempest: Shakespeare, Caliban, and Jonson.
This thing has been 4+ years in the making, and submitting it is surreal. Of course there will be revisions but holy shit. It exists.

Also, because I needed a break from the darkness (and because I'm hard up against the submission deadline for this book), I wrote the dedication today. I lost two mentors over the course of writing this book, and I know in my bones that this work was for, because, and in celebration of them.

Here's the footnote: As of publication, many of these statements have been taken down following the Trump administration’s crackdown on DEI programing. This chapter and the book at large focus on the period of time when these statements were publicly accessible.
I hate it here. I fucking hate it.

It’s the chapter that describes the equity and inclusion statements that cropped up on almost every theatre and theatre department's website. The statements that YES weren't perfect and YES some were performative but goddamnit at least SOME of those theatres were doing the fucking work.

I just had to add a footnote to the closing chapter of my book that made my whole body seize up.
It's the chapter that describes the American theatre's response to the summer of 2020 and the We See You White American Theatre document.

Ok so I’m a writer, and sometimes that makes me cry (because writing is HARD) but it’s never made me cry like this.
Current book project is about anti-racist efforts in post-2020 productions of The Tempest (which is a REAL problematic play that was REAL popular in 2021/2)
