Nice opinion Victor! I like the way of thinking to make regulations for engineered organisms more based on biochemical rules than on genetic rules, or maybe in general we should move to rules based on applications, are these beneficial to the planet and humanity, or just for making profit
Doing a PhD is - at heart - one long discussion with your mentor. The discussion changes over time - with unexpected turns and ups & downs - but through it all is a pair of people discussing a topic endlessly to make sense of it.

Sounds like a good plan to keep it simple and start like that, worked often well for us. Try to see maybe based on limited intermediate OD checks (glass tubes that fit in spectrophotometer can be convenient) if strain already speeds up, so you can see soon enough if better strains take over the pop.
