Cute little wooden cup I made yesterday.
You’d have probably drunk out of something like this if you were a Viking or lived around those times. Made in the same way they would’ve made them, on a pole lathe.

Another bowl—this is the last one from the tree we called the ‘Impossible Beech.’
You can see how much they warp as they dry. This one has been oiled with linseed.

A little beech bowl sat in the woods where it grew. Turned on a pole lathe.

Yes! I put them in a paper bag, for a couple of weeks, somewhere coolish and away from drafts. Then out in the warm to finish them off before oiling.

Most don’t crack. They warp and go oval depending on wood type grain orientation and wetness of the wood.
They occasionally split if they have an existing crack/check in the wood. Else the trick is to dry them slowly.

I normally use beech because that’s what I make the bowls from but this is soo much easier to carve. I found it much easier to get clean facets and detail. I’m no carver tho… not sure it will last as long as beech hence the thought of adding some urushi but it’s pretty resilient stuff.

Wooden bowl with spalting.
A copy of a bowl found on the Mary Rose that I made today. Turned on a pole lathe in the same way the original would’ve been. It’s a bit smaller than the cooks bowl found and I haven’t quite nailed the shape on this one. It’s nice tho, I need to make a bigger one again.

Reading about the past or watching documentaries are a great way to discover the past, but there's noting that compares to seeing the actual bowl a cook wrote his name on nineteen years before Shakespeare was born...

Taking this slightly rotten ash tree that fell a year or so ago and making it into a fireside bench. The carving is coloured with milk paint made with charcoal from the fire.

Nice to be back on the lathe after a break from turning although I found this one hard work. A familiar shape to kick off 2025.
Back to benches next week but we've had a couple of beech limbs come down in recent storms that are screaming to be bowls.
