Here's an example from Rilke (from Sonnets to Orpheus)

I do too! Especially when they are surprising questions, one that's not obvious to the content of the poem--they work as these portals into new ideas, new feeling.

Questions that remain in an effective poem add such subtle affective details to a poem's tone, have a robust syntactic architecture, and intellectual rigor. And most importantly--they still sing.
Questions can't be ramps--they must twist the reader in some new and frightening way.

If I were to do a craft talk and/ or workshop, I would spend one hour on questions: looking at the way poets successfully pose/ posit questions in a poem. So often, people leave in questions that were simply draft scaffolding.

This poem did not make it into Ankle-Deep in Pacific Water, but it was in the earliest drafts of the book. I found it incredibly hard to take this poem out of the book. Still, I love this poem and Alvin Coffey's important and particular experience of racial slavery.

The Poets We Turn To - POETRY INTERNATIONAL Artrice and Jon talk about the poets they regularly turn to, those whose work they can’t put down, and why.

It was really cool to hear this conversation between Atricia Bennett and Jon Tobias! I was really honored to be put in conversation with CA Conrad.

Over the past few days, with the release of ‘BLKNWS TERMS AND CONDITIONS‘, friends have shared that our “Black Outdoors” conversation with Fred Moten and Saidiya Hartman appears early in the film and was important to the filmmaker. ❤️💐

Happy publication birthday to my debut collection, Ankle-Deep in Pacific Water!

Yesterday, it was long listed from the 2025 Maya Angelou Book Award, alongside other brilliant poets.

Thank you to everyone who spent time reading the book. And thanks again to Haymarket for giving the book a home.

It is a great, great honor to have my first piece of scholarship published in Callaloo Journal. I join a long line of black thinkers and writers taking seriously the literary pursuits of Black and African Diasporic people.

These days, I should either be writing a chapter, article, or poem--or editing one. I love writing, but getting this career off the ground is incredibly difficult.

Juneteenth Reminds Us That “Black Freedom” Is an Ongoing Project Juneteenth reminds us that freedom — however seemingly impossible or ineffable — is worth spending our lives pursuing.

Last year, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by philosopher Dr George Yancy about Juneteenth. In the interview, we talk about the philosophical significance of freedom in relation to the ongoing work of antiblackness.

I am so happy my second collection Another Way to Say Dying is a finalist for the CAAPS Book Prize!

This book explores the demands of black queer love: the ways blackness renders the demand of love ineffable and the way relation is impossible under the duress of antiblackness.
