Thread passes through the folds, linking each section to the next and anchoring them to the supports. It’s a slow rhythm of needle, thread, and paper.
Done properly, this structure allows the book to open easily and survive decades (sometimes centuries) of use.
Before a book receives its cover, its decoration, or its gold, it needs something far more important: an enduring spine.
Traditional bookbinding relies on sewing the folded sections of the book together, one signature at a time.
Another beautiful finishing work from @teo.studio

The wet sheets are pressed to remove more water and then dried. Once dry, the paper can be further processed, such as by sizing so it can be used for writing on.
Once the desired thickness is achieved, the mould is carefully lifted out of the vat, allowing excess water to drain. The newly formed sheet of paper is then transferred onto a cloth, and the process is repeated to create additional sheets.
Papermaking in the Middle Ages
Medieval paper was made from linen rags, which were first beaten into a pulp. To create the paper, a mould and deckle are used. These are dipped into the vat of pulp, allowing the fibres to collect on the screen, forming a thin and even layer.
On our YouTube channel, you can find our talk with Jorge where he shows his printing workshop and a reconstructed medieval printing press!
Below is the description from their original post:
Our colleague printer Jorge Lar (@preloprints) among other things used to part in activities of an archaeological open-air museum & technology center recreating a Danish town from the early 1400’s Middelaldercentret (@middelaldercentret_nyk_falster).

Just a small snippet of the bookbinding process from Lorna McCurdy. Still, worth watching, as usual.

Probably, one of the most meditative processes in bookbinding. And also, the one that leads to so many ruined pieces of leather! 😅
Many thanks to @bigriverbindery and @tmcewan for the original videos! Please consider following them!

One of Hannah's signatures is elaborate and artful embroidery she puts on her bindings. But of course, we'll talk about other aspects of the project as well.
We'd be happy to see your reactions and answer any of your questions, so please join us live next Saturday!
Every year, fellows of Designer Bookbinders prepare six unique bindings for the award ceremony of the Booker Prize. This time, we invited Hannah Brown, a British bookbinder, to discuss her binding with us. Hannah's book was 'The Rest of Our Lives' by Ben Markovits.
