emet glorifying ancient society is fascinating. its his rose-colored glasses, his white-knuckling to try to convince himself that the society and people he sees now HAVE to be worse than his, that they ARE inferior, his past HAS to be better, because that's how you justify it

when emet hypes up ancient society as this paradise of paradises, and then when you see his recreation and its just a regular city with regular people at a regular dmv. but that's the whole point. its been thousand of years. at that point, you'd miss the dmv too

people be saying elpis was a perfect wonderful society with nothing wrong like it didn't have a whole dungeon where they shoved the fucked up Horrors into while lahabrea in the background of said dungeon was having 50 mental breakdowns in the span of 24 hours

nobody should ever say hermes was faultless and innocent but the takes i see sometimes where its like HE SHOULD HAVE JUST SUCKED IT UP WHY WAS HE DEPRESSED AND RUINED EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE is like uh. hm. can you. think about that for 2 seconds. please

this also lends to how people treat hermes as the Only Problem when his depression is more of a festering symptom reflective of the internal flaws of their society. who needs to address problematic darker aspects in a perfect utopia? its best to keep everything nice and happy!

you can tell hyth in this side story DOES care, he IS legitimately concerned about hermes, but he seems to regard hermes' sorrow over losing his creation as a puzzling thing that he puts aside easily to just go "get some rest! eat a fruit!" which is a real smack in the face

to add onto this: hythlodaeus is clearly not a bad person, but it is skewered esp in the side stores how his general pleasantness does lend to a certain kind of callousness. a lot of ancients are like him! no rocking the boat! and that's not a good thing

it's no coincidence that hythlodaeus gets his namesake from Thomas More's Utopia, named after the "speaker of nonsense" who lived in the the philosophical idea of "ideal society"! hyth in ffxiv is so well-meaning and almost Too Accepting to the point of literal self-sacrifice

the jokes about hythlodaeus being emet's "dead wife" get a chuckle or two from me, but i do worry that's like. all that he Is to people. he's a guy who gets framed as Important to Emet but his characterization and what it says about Ancient society is something i love seeing more

i need the wol to get hurt more in 8.0. i need a quest that makes in from the cold look like in from the mild and pleasant day, and every time someone complains about it they should add another worse wol suffering quest

meanwhile venus was never intended to be shipped with any npc, he was more of an oc to have Tension of a kind with my wol, but i joke that he really sidelined me and pointed at emet like THAT ONE I WANT TO KNOW THAT ONE and then the whole "venus looks like azem" idea hit me and the rest was history

nate was a rehash of an old oc thrown in ffxiv so they weren't made wholesale, but it really made me intrigued about her meshing with zenos because. they're both sort of Creatures struggling in the dark to find someone Like Them without even understanding themselves. i love thinking about it

i always did approach ffxiv with the intention of making a wol to interact with zenos, but it did evolve towards a more intricate idea that zenos, who has no connections with other and yet yearns for it, finds that very understanding he craves in a being that isn't even human in the first place
