The truth is, most people in my life don’t even know my “legal” name. The name I use every day is the one that feels real. The paperwork is the only thing clinging to the old one.

In a society that values personal freedom, updating your own name shouldn’t feel like asking for permission to exist differently. It should be accessible, secure, and reasonable — not an obstacle course.

Names carry meaning. Sometimes they reflect who we are. Sometimes they reflect where we came from. And sometimes they just don’t fit anymore.

Of course there should be safeguards. Fraud prevention matters. But we already track identity through Social Security numbers and official records. A name change doesn’t erase history — it updates it.

But when you simply want your name to reflect your life as it is now, you’re met with court filings, fees, and endless paperwork.

It shouldn’t be this hard to change your name.

We accept that names change. Marriage makes it simple (as long as you just want to change your middle and last). Divorce has a built-in process. Businesses rebrand all the time.
