Fourth day of #SeptSRC rising with Jenna Perry showing that there are septin isoforms with transmembrane proteins.
I also loved that the plants in the surrounding garden were chosen for their connections to her story, with Everlasting Flower (powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:ls...) being a particularly poignant choice.

I serendipitously came across this beautiful Henrietta Lacks statue in Bristol yesterday, whose cells I put through so many manipulations during my MPhil and PhD. It’s mind-blowing to think of how many labs across the world are using her cells to make discoveries and she died having no idea of this.
I also second Mara on this tip + share her dislike of gel extractions!
If it’s any consolation, at one point during my PhD, I made an agarose gel with H2O instead of TAE/TBE + wondered why it was running weirdly for ~30 mins before realising. I had vowed never to do this again after undergrad when I wasted a lot of time before learning H2O was not the solvent to use.

Hah I have actually considered this on a couple of occasions, but never been brave enough to do it!
On April 19, 1898, Camillo Golgi described what we now know as the #Golgi apparatus - a structure so pretty and unusual it took over fifty years for the scientific community to agree it wasn’t just an artefact.

I’m loving seeing all the blossoming trees + flowers while out and about, esp. magnolias which remind me of my hometown of Kyiv.
Today, I also came across an unfamiliar flower species, which I learned was in the genus Anemonoides thanks to the iNaturalist app!
