The turn to censorship/cancel culture is actually an opportunity for liberalism. A chance to get back to its philosophical roots, having been too censorious for too long, and a chance to be subversive again, too long ceded to the populist right.
After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.
Starmer has pulled out all the stops to flatter and impress Trump, but still hasn’t managed to get him to drop his damaging tariffs, take on Putin or tell Netanyahu to stop waging genocide.
It’s time for the UK to stand tough with allies who share our values.
