Many theories about the use of the slack rope (none of which are persuasive, imo), but I've never seen any theory trying to explain the tassels in practical terms! As you say they're probably just nice
While it would be wrong to say that everything VDH has ever done is bad, certainly the books that made him a household name ("Western Way of War" and "The Other Greeks") are very, very bad.
