Appropriating time as a material of intervention, the films attempt to disrupt the power of this frozen frame. By filming the photographs as the first creative measure of the compositions, we add another temporality to the frame.
The ‘natives’ as simple commodities, comparable to local fauna, to be found, controlled and utilised to deliver the fruits of these lands for a singular extractive idea of progress.
Colonial photography sets the vernacular for Western understanding of foreign landscapes and locals as docile material of conquest fantasy. Flora is rendered scenic, pretty, and benign.
Each of these films begins with a filmed photograph from the Cecil Rhodes archive kept at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford. The footage becomes data for exploration, the beginnings of a time study.
The single shot films in our exhibition 'I am in your dreams, but you are not in mine' now open @thephotographersgallery, are structured by a four point concept, which I'll share a little of in this and subsequent posts.
