My cultural awakening: an Eddie Izzard routine inspired me to learn French β and get a job with the EU
Being able to understand the comedian talking in French in his Dress to Kill show led to me learning several languages and working on the continent
I love hearing how people came to love learning languages and remember Eddie Izzard's 'Le singe est dans l'arbre' routine from when I first started teaching French. For me, it was aged 5, realising you got a bigger scoop of ice cream if you asked in Spanish.

Portrait of FΓ©lix Boillot, Professor of French, University of Bristol, WW1 veteran, Free French member in WW2.
Live illustration of our workshop at SFS annual conference this week by Camille Aubry.
In between all the sports histoty, I have been researching a former professor of French at Bristol, FΓ©lix Boillot (veteran of WW1, member of the Free French). So it was great to share his story with colleagues researching the history of French Studies in the early 20th century earlier this week.

Still navigating my way around the new Retronews site. Has anyone found a way to stop it from displaying every single individual page of a publication instead of individual issues? Am I missing something, or is it just not as good as it used to be?

I'm really keen to hear from any Arts and Humanities scholars working on gambling, past or present, nationally, internationally, transnationally. Just to know what sort of research is going on out there.

Alliance Française students, Waterstones Bristol
Thanks to the Alliance Française, Bristol, for a great evening discussing women and the Resistance with local French students. (Yes, people still want to learn languages, Cardiff.) There's something really magical about being allowed in a book shop after closing time, too.

Amazing time developing inclusive approaches to off-road cycling tourism with the Ministère de l'Economie, Luxembourg. And so great to be working working in such a vibrant, multilingual context. Kudos to European train travel too - only 6 hours from London.

Peter Lang Verlag - Sport in Paris
This edited volume proposes to revisit the development of recreational and professional sporting activities in the French capital between 1854 and 2024....
Really happy to have been asked to contribute a chapter to this excellent volume. Not on cycling (other sports are available) but marathon running in Paris in the Belle Epoque.
