A bed of daffodils is pretty much immortal. When I lived in rural Missouri, there was an empty field that had been full of miners shacks a hundred years ago. There were no signs of the shacks at all, except that in the spring you could make out where the walkways had been by the rows of daffodils.
One of my grad students is retired from his other career and travels the world as a historian on cruise ships. He gives talks and even holds office hours. I don't think it's a living though.

My online grad history class has an assignment called Choose Your Own Adventure: Find an interesting JSTOR article related to the weekly topic, tell everyone about it on the discussion boards. Students get to chase their own interests, get cozy with JSTOR, and I learn a ton. #AcademicSky
