[5/6] And we've built the tools: a searchable database (147 genes), free e-learning (5 modules + certification), and the Antibody Champions programme with NC3Rs. No excuses left.
[4/6] So we ran a Delphi study. 32 experts from Abcam, CST, eLife, Nature Protocols, MJFF, NC3Rs, and leading universities. 15 consensus recommendations. Every stakeholder group has a job to do.
[3/6] Global extrapolation: 4β7 million animal samples, 6β11 million human tissue samples consumed using antibodies that would fail independent testing. And those are conservative estimates.
[2/6] 97 antibodies failed all applications when tested with knockout controls. We traced them through 760 papers. 84% had zero validation evidence. 8,064 animal samples. 4,424 human tissue samples. Consumed without any evidence the antibodies worked. π
[1/6] Two new preprints out today from the OGA team. We've quantified the ethical costs of poor antibody validation for the first time β and developed a consensus plan to fix it. Thread π§΅

We're very pleased to publicly announce the winners of the 2025 Dorothy Bishop Prize, which celebrates the contributions of early career researchers working to promote #OpenResearch and improve #ResearchCulture.
Congratulations to:
- Annayah Prosser
- Michael Biddle
- Lewis Jones

This rate of validation suggests that antibodies should be considered non-specific until proven otherwise:
357 validated out of 1,124 tested.

The @ycharos.bsky.social antibody characterization protocol using knock-out cells as controls is now published, and endorsed. Remember though that itβs a generic protocol - you still need to do the proper controls for your own experiments! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
