This Juneteenth I feel compelled to reflect on the realities of our troubling past, to be uplifted by remembering the resilience and achievements of Black Americans, and to recommit to centering equity and intersectionality in my work and life. Happy Juneteenth everyone.

Science serves society best when its integrity is protected from political influence. The termination of NSF-funded research projects stems from fundamental misunderstandings. Many of these initiatives were grappling with some of the most vexing challenges we face as a nation, including health disparities. Historically marginalized groupsโespecially people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and immigrantsโexist, and experience some medical and psychological conditions at disproportionately high rates. To engage in science that serves everyone, we must ensure our research reflects the realities, needs, and perspectives of all populations. Scientific progress depends on an accurate understanding of people. Health conditions, illnesses and treatments can affect populations in distinct ways depending on factors like race, gender and sexual orientation. Inclusive studies are essential to understanding these differences and developing evidence-based solutions. The implications of these actions are deeply concerning not only for the U.S. but for the global scientific community. By halting research of this type, we risk denying individuals high-quality care based solely on their heritage or background. As a result, our ability to understand and deliver effective services to all Americans, particularly across lines of gender, race, and ethnicity, will be significantly diminished as will Americaโs standing as a leader in scientific research.
