In 1961, an elementary school in Toledo was named in Stewart’s honor. It became Ohio’s first all-girls public school in 2003 and houses a museum dedicated to her life. She was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 1978. She died on Nov. 27, 1987, at age 94 in Toledo. /end

In the 1950s, Stewart served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United States, traveling extensively in Southeast Asia to advocate for human rights and equality. In 1963, she was appointed to the U.S. commission of UNESCO, and in that role, she traveled worldwide as a U.S. goodwill ambassador. /6

Ella P. Stewart working at her desk. In 1957, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce invited her to address their group. When they found out she was black, they withdrew their invitation.

The Stewarts sold the pharmacy in 1945. Ella Stewart became president of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs in 1948 and served until 1952. She lobbied for anti-lynching legislation, equal opportunity in housing and education, and desegregation of local movie theaters. /5

The Stewarts lived above the pharmacy in Toledo’s Pinewood district, and their pharmacy and home became safe spaces for civil rights activists. They hosted prominent figures such as Marian Anderson, Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B. DuBois and Paul Robeson when they were refused lodging elsewhere. /4

Stewart passed the state exam later that year and became one of the first Black female licensed pharmacists. In 1922, she and her husband, William “Doc” Stewart, opened Stewart’s Pharmacy in Toledo, Ohio. It was the city’s first Black-owned pharmacy and served as a vital community hub. /3

Stewart worked as a bookkeeper in a pharmacy in Pittsburgh, which sparked her interest in becoming a pharmacist. The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy initially rejected her due to her race and gender. However, she persevered and earned her degree in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1916. /2

In 1973, Cline became the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. She was ranked 46th in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” Her tenacity allowed her to break gender barriers in Nashville, paving the way for future generations of artists. /end

Cline faced significant gender-based discrimination in the male-dominated Nashville country music industry of the 1950s and 60s. She struggled against a “good o’ boy” network and had to work twice as hard to prove her talent and earn respect. She was frequently the only woman on concert bills. /5

“Walkin’ After Midnight” was Cline’s breakthrough 1957 hit, which she performed on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts. “I Fall to Pieces” was her first No. 1 country hit, while “Crazy,” written by Willie Nelson, became her signature song. It is often cited as the top jukebox hit of all time. /4

Known for her rich contralto voice, Cline helped define the Nashville Sound in the early 1960s. She became one of the first country artists to successfully cross over into pop music and was the first female country artist to headline her own show in Las Vegas and to perform at Carnegie Hall. /3

The wreckage was found the following morning by a search party that included singer Roger Miller. Federal investigators attributed the crash to pilot error due to spatial disorientation. The pilot, who was not trained for instrument flight, flew into low-visibility conditions and severe weather. /2
