I'd love to find a way that this could work, since to me magic is supposed to be magic, and not science, but I've yet to find a way that would work in a game versus a novel.
Alas, it scared off most of the players, and the only guy who took a caster was the one who wants to find the loophole in everything. Short experiment.
I once (when I was young and foolish) ran a campaign where magic was "tell me what you are trying to do" instead of defined spells. I kept track of "magic points" but it was mostly to give the player an idea of how much power they had left, rather than a "1 point = X effect" kind of thing.
Sorry, man. But it's only "some" days, so there's that.
