Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Weβre celebrating some of the women in our community whose work spans climate, biodiversity, infrastructure and policy - shaping research and real-world impact. π
#WomenInScience #IDWGS #EveryVoiceInScience
This week biodiversity experts, academics and policymakers have come to Manchester for one reason: biodiversity.
Specifically, theyβve come to #IPBES12 to set the global agenda for how businesses measure and integrate nature into their plans π§΅
The British Ecological Society has curated this Virtual Issue to highlight research that is directly relevant to the work of the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)π

Given all that's going on, here's another systemic risk out there: the collapse of food production due to biodiversity loss in key areas of the world. This UK security analysis get it - a key message of the @ipbes.net Nexus Assessment as well. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
I have been a part of the @britishecologicalsociety.org for many years, and it has come to feel like my academic home, so I am really honoured to have been appointed as a Fellow of the society.
Honoured to have been elected as a Fellow of the @britishecologicalsociety.org alongside people I have admired for most of my career. Hoping to up the representation of wonderful female ecologists as well - so if you are one, or know any, definitely apply in the next round!
Split-screen image on a deep green background. Left side contains a statement from Dr David Obura, IPBES Chair, regarding the US withdrawal from IPBES and extinction threats to over 1 million species. Right side shows a photograph of a man wearing glasses, dressed in a dark jacket and grey shirt, seated at a conference table with a microphone. The IPBES logo appears at the bottom with the tagline "Science and Policy for People and Nature". The design features white typography on the dark green background, creating a professional contrast. Several small pins or badges are visible on the speaker's jacket.
βWe cannot withdraw from the fact that over 1 million species of plants and animals face extinction.β
IPBES remains committed to its mandate to provide the most credible science and evidence about biodiversity to all decision makers and actors.

If you are at the @britishecologicalsociety.org and have experience of, or want to know more about, how ecologists can get involved with international policy and what the BES can do to support you as a member then come along to our workshop with Rob Booth (BES) and David Cooper (JNCC) on Tuesday!
The climate crisis is gendered: must read blog by Chen Ly. It is essential that research into and solutions for the climate and biodiversity crises are seen through a lens of equity and justice. @imperialsci.bsky.social @ic-cep.bsky.social

A promotional image for IPBES12 in Manchester showing the city's transformation. The layout features a title "From industrial revolution to nature restoration: Manchester Hosts #IPBES12" in green text. Below are two contrasting images of Manchester: On the left, a black and white historical photograph shows industrial-era Manchester with rows of terraced houses and multiple factory chimneys emitting smoke. On the right, a modern color photograph displays a green, tree-filled suburban area with a winding river and the contemporary Manchester skyline with high-rise buildings in the background. The event dates "3-8 FEBRUARY 2026 | #BIZBIODIVERSITY" appear at the bottom. The IPBES logo is visible in the top right corner.
In February 2026, experts will gather in Manchester for #IPBES12 to assess business-biodiversity connections through IPBES #BizBiodiversity Assessment.
The city that transformed global commerce will now host discussions on transforming our relationship with nature.

The reason I love my job - I get to work with all these wonderful people! Start of a new year, with new and old members of the Transdisciplinary Centre for Nature and People (TCNP) at the @ic-cep.bsky.social @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social @imperialsci.bsky.social
New year, new set of @ic-cep.bsky.social @imperialsci.bsky.social MSc in Environmental Technology students tackling the bridge building exercise!
Great being part of this team - I learnt so much and the open and collaborative nature of how the paper was developed was a really great way to do science! And on that note, we really welcome constructive comments during the open review of the preprint - see the link below!
