Poor quality, isolated habitat promotes dispersal in an endangered riparian bird, but long-distance dispersal requires benign climatic conditions and high population density πŸ“Š

To enhance connectivity, suggests actions that boost source populations 🐦🌏 πŸ§ͺ

Bats catch a lift from storm winds on long-distance migrations Migrating hundreds and hundreds of miles is hard work for the common noctule bat. But this European species makes its marathon journey a little bit easier by paying attention to the weather.

And with that, Year 9 of #25DaysofFishmas is complete! Thank you to everyone who's followed along and shared these silly (and occasionally interesting) posts about #GreatLakes fish. I hope you have the chance to celebrate the amazing world just under the water's surface all year long!

#Fishmas Day is here at last, so break out the candy canes because Day 25 is all about the stripes - the Striped Shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus), that is!

We end this year's #GreatLakes #25DaysofFishmas by shining some light on a small fish who’s not often in the spotlight ✨

Kicked off our sampling season in style with a few big snook. I was fortunate to acoustically tag this fish a few years back. Though I’ve handed over my scalpel to some great new lab mates since, it made me happy to see this one still running around the Shark River, Everglades National Park 🐟

As another cool native #GreatLakes species often mistaken for being invasive, the Chestnut Lamprey (Ichthyomyzon castaneus) is perfect for today’s #GarWeek theme of β€œInvasive Species Awareness”! Though they may not be winning any beauty contests #25DaysofFishmas

If you're dreaming of snow and cold this winter, you're in good company - the Pygmy Whitefish (Prosopium coulterii), is a small, little-known fish adapted for life in cold and dark environments like the deepest parts of Lake Superior #25DaysofFishmas ❄️

A brown-colored fish called a pirate perch wears a Santa hat; the text says December 1

The pirate perch’s scientific name β€œAphredoderus” comes from the Greek β€œaphod” meaning β€œexcrement” and β€œdere” meaning β€œthroat” - so basically, β€œpoop neck.”

Unlike most fish, their urogenital opening (a hole for excretion + reproduction) is located on the throat #25DaysofFishmas

More #fish species have been found in the world's #freshwater habitats (~1% of Earth's surface) than in all the world's oceans (~70% of Earth's surface).

In August, a forest burned and a reef bleached.

How the Andrews Forest and Moorea Coral Reef LTER sites respond to these disturbances highlights the struggle and opportunity that come with an irreparably altered ecosystem.

So excited to finally see this paper out in Conservation letters!

We worked collaboratively w/ recreational anglers (through CCFRP) to sample 12 MPAs over 6 years & found evidence to further support age and size matter for fish across a temperate reserve network.
