The answer to problems in sociotechnical systems is not always "more software", "better software" or "open source software".
A lot of the time the best solution is _less software_ and sometimes even _no software_.

Even if it werenβt overrun with Nazis kind of baffling to me that people whose jobs involve verifying information want to hang out on the anti-citation site.
Due process violations don't get worse than this. Appalling stuff from Virginia State, every administrator involved should lose their job
I would imagine no. I think what is more likely is that campuses implement 2FA for Canvas and then students get used to giving the app access and it just begins βaccidentallyβ accessing other systems. The user agreement will probably put students on the hook for granting that access.
And given single sign-on, it will potentially have the capacity to scrape every student-facing system, not just Canvas.
So, I fired off some bullet point style thoughts about Einstein, the alleged agentic AI that can handle a Canvas course. For me, it changes nothing in terms of the big picture response to generative AI. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...
BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.
This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.
Scientists: if you have pursued/secured philanthropic funding in the wake of federal research funding cuts, I want to talk to you.

The power of performance to evoke thought and empathy is why authoritarian and fascist regimes tend to seek power over (or nationalize) arts organizations.
Itβs why they defund arts & humanitiesβ¦ or βtemporarilyβ close arts organizations for βrenovationβ

This elitist view that only rich/Ivy/private school kids should study/have access the liberal arts is so deeply ingrained in so many highly educated Democratsβ views (including tons who majored in the lib arts themselves) that they donβt even realize they hold it, let alone how ugly & elitist it is
I'm pretty sure I know. They aren't. We're not going to really be able to make a lot of progress in dealing with the implications of this tech unless and until we get rid of all this "woo-woo" talk about LLMs. Anthropic pushing this line is PR, unserious.
Also, generally big supporter of more focus on sustainability in the literature.
IMO, student leadership programs are also another example of this problem. They typically reward entrepreneurialism and being visibly seen as a leader over the quieter work of organizing. And then we recruit HE professionals from those programs and wonder why thereβs dissatisfaction.
This is the same reason eugenics flourished in Western universities.
"Arguing that intelligence and adjacent traits are biologically determined served a clear function for a man like Epstein ... a natural, objective explanation and rationale for their perch at the top of society."
Feel free to drop Gallup a line, folks! I know I DID.

I wish that primary and secondary math did a better job showing students how different areas of math fit together. Then folks can make an educated choice as to where to go.

Everything youβre hearing from the Trump administration is a lie. Today was one of the most active days in Northeast since the entire Operation Metro Surge began.
Nothing is changing on the ground in Minneapolis, no matter what headlines Trump and Homan try to create.
They have made clear that it was never just about illegal immigration: they hate all immigrants.
Four graphs showing college enrollment for four groups of students: low-income URM, low-income non-URM, high-income URM, and high-income non-URM. Each graph has a line for different types of colleges based on selectivity. The URM graphs show their enrollment at Ivy Plus colleges decreased after SCOTUS struck down affirmative action. The low-income non-URM graph shows their enrollment increased at Ivy Plus colleges, particularly for students with SAT scores above 1400. There is little change in enrollment patterns for high-income non-URM students.
New study shows after SCOTUS struck down affirmative action the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students enrolling in Ivy Plus colleges decreased by ~450
The number of low-income non-URM students increased by ~120, suggesting these colleges placed more weight on income in absence of race
