“Faculty are now seeing the AAUP as the only place where their issues, their interests and their jobs are being protected against the legislature and the IU administration.”

ICE is detaining a Bloomington man from Afghanistan at rural Indiana county jail. His friends and family say they have no idea why. @weiss-a-woni.bsky.social
After co-authoring an op ed in the Tufts student paper, Rümeysa Öztürk was doxed by the Canary Mission, an anonymous website that publishes personal information of academics they consider anti-Israel. ICE then used the data to target her in carrying out Trump's brutal student protest crackdown.

A detailed black-and-white illustration of a large crowd of people packed together, holding protest signs that read “Free Speech Is an American Value,” “Stop Censoring Teachers,” “Education Needs Free Speech,” “Freedom to Speak, Freedom to Teach, Freedom to Learn for Everyone!,” “Education Is a Human Right,” and “Keep Your Nose Out of My Classroom and Education.” Behind the crowd are hand-drawn banners with “AAUP” in large block letters. Overlaid text at the bottom announces event details in bold marker-style font: “Rally for Free Speech, Friday 12/5, 3pm, Bryan Hall – IUB Campus, 107 S. Indiana.” A column of smaller text on the right lists issues such as recommended Chicago Principles, demands for “American values,” instructors removed for teaching course content, NEA defenses against attacks, and ongoing legislative actions against public schools. The overall style resembles a high-density pen-and-ink illustration filled with expressive faces and signs.
Join us Fri 3pm at Bryan Hall for a Rally for Free Speech — standing against ICHE’s “core American values” mandate & in defense of academic freedom. Then our AAUP chapter mtg 4–5:30 in Woodburn 101. Faculty & students: show up for free inquiry! #AAUP #AcademicFreedom
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education's new policy is threatening shared governance and academic freedom.
"This policy is the latest effort by Indiana's politicians to take power away from faculty & cheapen the education students have access to in Indiana."

Before creating new degrees, Indiana’s public colleges and universities will have to explain to the state how they will promote American values. @indianacapitalchronicle.com
Indiana University president Pamela Whitten is asking faculty government to consider adopting the Chicago Principles, a set of guidelines about free speech on campus. One faculty leader says he's optimistic.

IU’s decision to suspend the print publication of its student newspaper is costing the institution: Alumni are pulling donations in protest. The university ended the IDS’s print edition after firing the paper’s adviser.

Reject the ongoing censorship of student media on our campuses!
“Administrative efforts to subordinate campus journalism to public relations are inconsistent with the mission of higher education to provide a space of intellectual exploration and debate”

Administrators at Indiana University baselessly fired the student media director and ordered the student paper to cease its print edition, so it'd sure be a shame if this excellent digital front page were to be widely shared today

Indiana University fired the director of student media amid growing tension between the school and the student newspaper over what content was allowed in the print edition.
It's time for IU to respect the value of its educators, and ensure faculty, staff, and graduate student worker compensation keeps pace with the cost of living and ensures that we can live and thrive. Fair compensation is essential to a world-class university.
Line graph with the title "IU Compensation in Inflation Adjusted 2024 Dollars." Red line goes downward, representing faculty compensation; green line shoots upwards, representing IU President Whitten's compensation. More details in caption/description.
At IUB, faculty salaries have not kept up with the cost of living. As the graph shows, relative to the cost of living, average faculty salaries declined by 10% between 2019 and 2025. Yet even with a vote of no confidence, Whitten's compensation has ballooned.
Despite changes affecting the lives of tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff, Indiana University continues to make most important decisions in secret and leaders routinely avoid interviews with informed journalists. @weiss-a-woni.bsky.social
“Acquiescing to a Mailman compact would be a profound betrayal of your students, staff, faculty, the public, higher education, and our shared democracy—one that would irretrievably tarnish your personal reputation and compromise your institution’s legacy.” 🔥
