For the “following” tab to stop showing random stuff, you can go to Settings > Content & media > Following feed preferences. Then turn off “show samples” at the bottom. I also turn off “reposts”. Then this tab only shows you content from people you follow.

I think mine was initially closest to the door too but after a few years of sleeping on the right side in that room, i find that it’s now become the right side when I’m traveling regardless of where the door is. Curious if I switched rooms what it’d be.
I only get 6 hours of sleep and it’s hard to fall asleep, but lately I read until my eyes are so heavy that I pass out. I have a holder for my kindle so I don’t drop it on my face at that point lol. I’ve also fallen asleep to music or a documentary type YouTube video so my brain gets quiet
