Chart showing latest surge is biggest yet
With cooler temperatures comes a Covid surge: new US cases top 83,000, the most in a single day since the pandemic began. About 800 Americans are dying each day, and almost a quarter million have died so far. There is no vaccine and no cure. This new surge is hitting rural America especially hard.
He warns that Joe Biden, if elected will "listen to the scientists."
On Twitter, he mocks Fauci's form when he threw out a ceremonial Opening Day pitch - back in July.

The US death toll passes 220,000.
Trump says America is over the pandemic and repeatedly attacks Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“People are tired of Covid. People are saying, ‘Whatever, just leave us alone.’ People are tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots," Trump says.

In a prerecorded video, he tells Americans to "get out there." "Don't be afraid of it," he says. "Don't let it dominate your lives."
Despite being contagious, Trump does not replace his mask when greeted by mask-wearing staffers.
Donald J. Trump 8 @realDonaldTrump • Follow I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don't be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago! 2:37 PM • Oct 5, 2020
On Twitter, he dramatically downplays the virus risk, telling Americans not to fear the disease that has killed 211,000 so far. He portrays his illness - which aides later reveal was life-threatening - as a rejuvenating spa treatment. "I feel better than I did 20 years ago!"
Trump on the Truman Balcony, removing his mask for the cameras
After three days of experimental antiviral drugs unavailable to most Americans, Trump leaves the hospital to return to the White House. He takes the unusual route of climbing the stairs of the White House South Portico where he theatrically removes his mask, waving, saluting and giving thumbs-up.
A Secret Service agent tells CNN that Trump seemed to have no concern for his agents, two dozen of whom have already become sick after his rallies. "The frustration with how we're treated when it comes to decisions on this illness goes back before this though. We're not disposable."
Dr. James P. Phillips, MD @DrPhillipsMD • 1h Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary Presidential "drive-by" just now has to be quarantined for 14 days. They might get sick. They may die. For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater. This is insanity.
Dr. James P. Phillips, MD @DrPhillipsMD That Presidential SUV is not only bulletproof, but hermetically sealed against chemical attack. The risk of COVID19 transmission inside is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding. My thoughts are with the Secret Service forced to play.
JQP @DrPhillipsMD Follow Today, I worked my final shift at Walter Reed ER. I will miss the patients and my military and civilian coworkers - they have been overwhelmingly supportive. I'm honored to have worked there and I look forward to new opportunities. I stand by my words, and I regret nothing. 9:22 PM • 12/27/20 From Earth
A top doctor at Walter Reed medical hospital, disaster medicine specialist Dr. James Phillips, tweeted criticism of the stunt. He lost his job.

Amid cable TV chatter of transferring power to Mike Pence, Trump shocks doctors by briefly leaving the hospital so his motorcade can drive slowly by a handful of flag waving supporters as he waves. He is accused of endangering the lives of the two Secret Service agents with him.
At Walter Reed, Trump begins taking the antiviral drug remdesivir. His blood oxygen dangerously low, he is also receiving dexamethasone, a steroid given to the most critically ill patients.
Notably, he is not treated with hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin, the quack cures he urged on his fans.

Oct 2 2020
In a 1 am tweet, Trump announces he has Covid, which has now killed 200,000 Americans. All campaign events are canceled a month before the election. Trump is admitted to the Walter Reed military hospital where he is given experimental drugs. His staff conceals that he lies close to death.
What the business news looks like Oct 1, 2020:
26.5 million Americans are unemployed - 837,000 lost their jobs just last week as Disney laid off 28,000 theme park employees, Allstate cut 3,800 positions, and American and United Airlines newly furloughed 30,000 people.
(He later denies he tested positive before the debate and then says he tested negative after testing positive. Chris Christie, who helped Trump with debate prep, blamed him for infecting him ahead of the Cleveland encounter. Christie nearly died.)

Trump and Biden meet in Cleveland for a Fox News debate. Trump mocks Biden for frequently wearing a mask. He does not reveal that he and his wife had tested positive for Covid three days before the debate, where his wife and children all removed their masks contrary to venue rules.

Trump packs the White House Rose Garden to announce he is naming conservative Amy Coney Barrett to replace the trailblazing Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. It is later called a superspreader event: a dozen people in the unmasked crowd, including Trump and the First Lady, caught COVID.
Visiting the California wildfires, Trump scoffs at officials worrying about global warming.
Trump: "It'll start getting cooler. You just watch."

From the NYT 9/11 2024 That argument had been what Mr. Trump's advisers had coached him to say in a handful of debate preparation sessions that they had studiously avoid calling debate preparation sessions, preferring to describe them as "policy time." They had hoped he would look directly at the camera and ask voters if they were better off now than they were four years ago.
