Our results show the Keweenaw Peninsula is a critical landscape for migrating birds, and that acoustic monitoring reveals key migration pathways. Our high-passage sites will now form the Keweenaw Bird Observatory’s long-term monitoring effort. # ornithology
When winds made Lake Superior crossings unfavorable, migrants reoriented across the peninsula, with morning headwinds and crosswinds shaping westward, into-the-wind movements that likely corrected wind drift. On favorable winds, migrants continued towards their desired destinations.
