Herb Pennock (241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts), of the Athletics, Red Sox, and Yankees, one of the greatest southpaws ever, died of a brain hemorrhage on January 30, 1948. He was just 53. Later that year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Few managers won as consistently as Billy Southworth, who was born #OTD in 1893.

From 1941-45, his @cardinals.com teams averaged 101 wins per season while capturing three NL pennants and two World Series titles.

On August 5, 1926--99years ago today--the STL Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Robins 11-9. Billy Southworth went 3-5 with 4 RBIs. Pete Alexander got the save. Southworth and Alexander--both acquired mid-season--would lead the Cardinals to the NL pennant. www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/nebraska/978...

In two days, one of my favorite ballplayers of all time goes into the @baseballhall.org. We all know that Ichiro had as many tools as the game allowed. So let’s also take a moment to appreciate another of his tremendous talents: acting.
