League context does matter. In my 2 long running leagues I'm in there is no bench players in either one. To place in the money in leagues you do need to "hit" on a couple to few guys, but I'd still contend it's higher probability to do so while avoiding the bigger risk/reward players.

Side note: I just submitted my keeper list (can be adjusted though for the next 10 days). I have Hader and E. Diaz at top end closer costs for the league (maybe a couple $ discount on them tho) on that submitted list. I'll likely pull Hader back off it. Have Uceta at almost minimum bid at $2 on it.

Because there are enough...and i use this term lightly...safer options available where they are already worth where/what $ you are getting them at. No NEED to take the risk, UNLESS the value (ADP/$ COST) has slid enough. BUT, that's the rub. Usually the value doesn't slide ENOUGH. 😉
I avoid risky players...unless i get them at a discount. There's enough talent available every season to be able to do that. Unfortunately for everyone I'm just a guy obsessed with fantasy baseball and don't want to give away my secrets of what and when the risk is too high to my competition. 😉
With that and the new 1B coach there...IF he stays healthy...watch out!

He's one of...I don't have it in front of me but...7 or so hitters that I will only roster at a serious auction discount (part of my new process started last offseason due to reading your book that has immensely helped), which means I'll never roster due to someone always willing to pay up.

I have him as a $4 carry over player in a 15-team traditional 5x5 roto cats league (22 player rosters with 5 of them being SP and 3 have to be RP eligible). So, I'm in a "hope for the best" spot as that's a great SP price for him ($250 to $260 spent on players at auction).
