Even high-skilled mothers spend long periods away from paid work – a challenge in times of skill shortages.
How do we know? We combine skill scores with register data on births and labour market spells from @statistik.at. For the first time, we observe skills and parental leave behaviour together.
📖 New publication: "When Gender Trumps Skills: Employment Trajectories of Austrian Parents After Their First Birth". Claudia Reiter and @sonja-spitzer.bsky.social show that in AT, gender differences in parental leave are huge: Mothers take 416 days, fathers only 9.

The results show that women at age 50 lived more unhealthy years than men across almost all health indicators and 22 countries. Findings support the “longevity hypothesis”, according to which women spend a greater number of years in poor health because they live longer.

The share of couples with large age gaps (≥10 years) has also fallen (see figure). This may imply higher female autonomy and more balanced gender power dynamics. The study specifically addresses the role of women's and men's education.
