On Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, the Dutch Parliament will debate the Spring Budget (Voorjaarsnota). This is our moment to send a clear message: the dismantling of higher education must stop. Email party leaders and share your personal story.

Letβs stand together with students, staff, alumni and allies from across the Netherlands. Letβs show that Maastricht and Limburg care about knowledge, care about education, care about our future.
We will gather at 12:00 on the Dam, with a powerful program:
β Speeches by academics, artists, and (soon to be confirmed) political representatives
β A reflection moment: Cabinet out, cuts out!
β 12 information booths from universities across the country
On Tuesday, June 10, we take to the streets again. The attack on higher education continues, but so does our resistance. More than ever, we need visibility, unity, and collective action.
It's not too late to stop the cuts!
Rendez-vous on the Dam in Amsterdam on June 10, 12:00-17:00.
If you are a member of AoB or FNV, register for a free train ticket. UM will also reimburse your ticket.

Strike in Amsterdam June 10!
The Dutch cabinet may have fallen, but the future of higher education in the Netherlands is still uncertain. We need to let the caretaker government and all the political parties know that the recently adopted budget with its drastic cuts to higher ed cannot stand...
The KNAW has issued a stark warning: academic freedom is at risk in the Netherlands due to increasing political interference in research and education. The planned budget cuts are part of a broader attack on higher education. We must stand firm in rejecting the erosion of academic autonomy.

π’ WOinActie calls on Minister Bruins to act according to his own words.
If remembrance is a fight against indifference, then this fight must begin with supporting the very systems that teach, imagine, and investigate.
π Education. π¬ Research. π Cultural Imagination.
Let's defend them - together.
... as vital weapons against forgetting and repetition of historical injustice.
We wholeheartedly agree. But these soft forces require support. And the same minister is now threatening their future through destructive budget cuts across all levels of Dutch education.
Yesterday, on May 4, 2025, Minister Eppo Bruins gave a moving speech during Remembrance Day at Kamp Amersfoort. He reminded us that βcommemoration is fighting against indifference.β He spoke of the βsoft forcesβ of societyβeducation, research, and cultural imagination...
πAnd join us in the Hague on June 10th!
...to go through a highly inefficient test to determine which BA degrees can continue to be offered in English.
Today, together with our union partners, we are calling for a national strike across education sectors on 10 June!

A week ago, we stood together on the Vrijthof to defend our universities.
On Friday, the cabinet announced its plans to cut another 400 million a year from primary and secondary education. Yesterday, the minister confirmed he will force universities...

From morning teach-outs to our march through the city, we showed The Hague that Limburg's education sector refuses to accept these harmful cuts without resistance. As UM's President Letschert's said, "If you do not sow, you will not reap." Today was just the beginning of our collective resistance.
"Our connection with colleagues from the Open University and Zuyd University demonstrated that all of Limburg's higher education stands united in this critical fight for our region's future."
1,500 strong at the Vrijthof! As Janosch Prinz powerfully articulated: "Today we witnessed remarkable solidarity across our entire academic community. Students, scientific and support staff stood shoulder to shoulder, sending an unmistakable message to The Hague."
"Scientists and support staff stood united today in Maastricht. No critical thinking without practical strength." β

protest march through the inner city of Maastricht: union flags and hats in front of the old Dutch houses. Also pictured a protest sign (in Dutch) that translates to βeveryone has a right to education and peaceβ
protesters, neatly sticking to one lane of the street, going up a bridge, as far as the eye can see
at the Vrijthof, a wide shot of the protesting masses
Today, I stood & marched with 1500+ colleagues and students in opposition to the governmentβs budget cuts to higher education.
