Established in 1810, the Swedenborg Society is a registered charity, academic publisher, museum, gallery and archive. We organize a wide range of FREE cultural events, lectures, exhibitions, educational workshops and film screenings.
The main church of the Swedish congregation in London, which once stood in the square now known as Swedenborg Gardens (and beneath which Swedenborg’s coffin was laid to rest in 1772), is named after Ulrika Eleonora, and is now located in Harcourt Street, Marylebone.
#OnThisDay 23 January 1688: Birth of Ulrika Eleonora (1688-1741), queen of Sweden who reigned between 1718-20. During her brief reign, she ennobled the Swedberg family, which gave Emanuel the amended surname of Swedenborg and a place in the Swedish House of Nobles
#OnThisDay 22 January 1849: Birth of August Strindberg (1849-1912), the great Swedish playwright. Strindberg's ‘Inferno’ period in the mid-1890s is imbued with Swedenborg.
