A lot of this is the ancient art of new v. old guard infighting. New generation of x trying to establish themselves in opposition to y, whatever that means. The more lasting sense y makes, the less sense x does when trying to overthrow or otherwise thwart y. And also... ppl get off on bad takes.

Hollywood has been doing that for years. It's kind of a weird and harmful adjunct of the "great artist" shit that we still contend with. They are screwy geniuses who deserve to get away with a few things because, like, where would x be without them? Without them! Which is the point.

Plus, y'know, other writers writing is never the actual problem. It's very bizarre to come across the sorta arms race of niche takes in niche fields out in the wild. Sometimes I think they just say shit and hope to go viral or start a day of social media fights. I mean, of course they do.

I think it's also because they started doing shit like going into space for fun, talking about Mars colonies and being (not evil) in international waters and most people were like "haha what a bunch of weirdos" which I think made them very cross and >:(

When it's not because the author is trying to explore science/tech/the future in some way, it's often because they need to level the playing field somehow. They need a way to create the conditions for their dystopian society and often this requires technology or events that sweep the board clean.

Scientific research of gender transition has been stuck on "should these people be allowed to transition" for 50 years, so we don't know shit about how transitioning actually works.

I try to explain this and depending on audience, results VARY. Doctors do not like to hear this, clutching outdated guidelines like pearls. Other queer ppl are like yeah, no duh, cuz they face the same. Some normies think it's evidence this is all a delusion we suffer.

We all need to know more.

The real reason they ask this question is cuz they are desperate for a reason not to. But they're too scared of the discomfort to just... use labor as leverage against capital.
