If they actually controlled for variables, and so on. A lot of people just read the abstract and take it as given that the rest is sound. Anyway, a bit of a soapbox but if the general public understood the scientific methodology they'd be harder to fool

Anyway a lot of people don't understand literature review to see the context of how a scientific paper fits into the greater picture, to look at methodologies to see if the way they went about it is actually sound and if they have a reasonable number of people/data points to draw their conclusions

Journalist certainly don't understand it, or don't care. They'd rather find two opposing viewpoints to create tension, instead of doing a literature review to see that 99% of scientist say that climate change is real for decades now.

Is there an ologies episode on the scientific method? I looked but I couldn't find one. One of the greatest complaints in the patient community is many drs don't actually understand the scientific method, don't understand how to read and Vet research papers, and to update their practice accordingly

One of the best defensives is a really good, free education system with required modules on media literacy, logic and the scientific method. Most people don't actually understand the scientific method and how to apply it, and treat it like a belief

What happens? Human history. Ex: the lies made up to justify slavery or stop and frisk, the lies made up to justify rounding up thousands of Japanese and Japanese Americans and steal their property and businesses (putting into prison my dad who was SIX MONTHS OLD, a citizen, and all my family) etc
