AI Skills Boost - AI Skills Hub
I think I might take one of these "under 20 minutes" AI skills courses the UK Govt. seems very keen on everyone doing and live-post it here... Maybe we can all learn something together! The press release sends me to aiskillshub.org.uk/aiskillsboost/ - let's go and see!

@joannahs.bsky.social dear Mr Pickle, please let us know if youβd like our support in the event you start proceedings for being so negligently left out of this weekβs βThe Diaryβ column (which was otherwise excellent). We are sure you could make a good case for neglectβ¦

Odds being offered on the next leader of the Reform Party including Johnson, Jenrick, Braverman and Rees-Mogg
or is it a precursor to looking to move Farage out and have Reform run by someone more attractive to the wider Conservative base? Cincinnatus may still, yet, give up his plough....

Happy birthday to Mabel. Despite her occasional worries about the world, she would follow you to the ends of it. Which she proved again a couple of days ago.

1 Before formulating regulations, be clear about the risk you are trying to reduce (too many organisations assume regulations are needed, but without really investigating why).
2 Make sure that the regulation actually targets the risk (too many organisations want to show that they are 'doing something' but the something may have no relation to the actual risk).
3 Make sure that the regulation will actually reduce the risk, not increase it (if people don't like the regulation, and try to get round it, its possible that you will increase the risk).
4 Make sure that the regulation does not have side effects that are worse than the risk that is being reduced.
Once you've done this you can start talking about transparency and simplicity, which is where the discussion too often starts.
I wrote a paper called 'Rules for Regulators' in an edited collection, John-Stewart Gordon ed. Smart Technologies and Human Rights (Brill 2021) and others have encouraged me to share it a bit more widely. Link here.

Disneyβs Snow White | Official Trailer | In Theaters March 21
YouTube video by Disney
This Snow White remake trailer ran before Moana 2 last week. I assumed it was just one that I had erased from my brain βΒ not that it hadn't been released online yet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV46...

I have said it before and will say it again: The BBC's Natural History Unit is worth the licence fee alone. Over the last 50 years, I have learnt more about the natural world from the BBC than anywhere else. It is a magnificent thing which we should cherish.

Etymology of the day: to be βblowing a hoolieβ (or βhooleyβ) was probably inspired by the Orkney word βhoolanβ, a howling gale, with a touch of the βhooleyβ that is a very noisy party thrown in.

Trials are being adjourned from 2024 to 2026 at one London court with capacity issues.
Imagine getting the call to be told your trial (on either side of the courtroom) was being delayed.
It wonβt start on time.
Not by 2 hours. Or days. Not by 2 weeks. Or months.
But 2 years.

Fantastic thread - I would say it brings back memories but actually, I remember oddly little of my visit except the overall shabbiness - it was quietly falling apart by November.
