Allo romance authors, please stop writing ace spectrum - esp demisexual - characters as "gay for you". Their asexuality isn't made moot by the fact that they're interested in a relationship with someone.
I want a broader range of historical romances. Give me ancient worlds, Africa, South America, even France and Spain feel more interesting. And forgotten niches of history (have you heard about all the people trying to build utopian communes during the Regency? It went bad so dramatically!).
Colorised sketcbook pages depicting various character from the Mario franchise. On the left side, Goombella and Vivian chat over a cup of tea about their crushes. On the top right, Rosalina daydreams at a garden table with a mug of hot tea in her hand. Behind her, a starry background where a few lumas twirl around with Mario's spaceship. And finally on the botom right, Luigi hums while reading a magazine.
My ultimate anti-stress remedy ? Drawing Mario characters in casual clothes, having a nice time π
Painting on a golden-hued, buff toned square coaster of a pied peahen amid pink peonies. The peahen is mostly brown with barred feathers but has a blue-green neck, and, in common with pied coloration, has patches of white feathers interspersed throughout. She is in profile, facing left. The piece is lightly stylised with generally flat colours and fine detailing on the feather markings.
Pied Peahen & Peonies
Gouache & acrylic gouache on MDF coaster, 98 mm.
This piece ended up taking a long time for what was supposed to be relatively βsimple.β π
The peahenβs neck is actually more teal-blue-green, but neither my phone camera nor my scanner were equal to capturing this.

A collection of illustrations of crocodiles and alligators against a soft green and yellow background. They are playfully either swimming or loafing around, playing with fish, taking care of their young and chilling in the water. The crocodiles and alligators are mostly green and yellow, save for an albino alligator. Theyβre so loving and fun, these toothy friends!

This is so so good and Iβm only about 15% of the way in.
The main characters are immortals living through the end of the world. Iβd say itβs a darker fantasy developing eventually into a F/F romance (but Iβm not to that part yet!). #booksky

Today is the LAST DAY of the friendship bundle! If you would prefer to immerse yourself in stories about friendship rather than romantic interest, this is the bundle for you!
Iβm about halfway through and I do think it holds up even though itβs almost 20 years old.
Iβm rediscovering Historical a little this year and Iβve really enjoyed learning history through romance stories.
It also inspires me to do a bit of research online whenever I encounter new information!
Wild Sweet Love by Beverly Jenkins. Clinch cover.
Celebrating with this 2007 Historical/Western romance for Valentineβs Day! Beverly Jenkins is a Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award winner but this is my first book of hers Iβve read.
A medieval illustration of a hedgehog with grapes skewered on its spines
It was believed in medieval times that hedgehogs had spikes so they could roll over fruit to carry home to their children, which is not true but is a really cute idea
The maid and the crocodile by Jordan Ifueko. The cover has a girl in yellow with vitiligo and the shadow of a crocodile.
Just finished this and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a romance which examines class inequality and disability in a fantasy setting. Iβve loved all three books by this author and I think sheβs becoming a favorite :)
Last year I decided to find and read more self pub authors and LGBT+ authors.
This year I wanted to read more BIPOC and non American authors/translated works.
I just heard about this database and thought it was a super cool resource to help me with my reading goal:

I have to go in on my day off for extra training.
We are currently trying to determine if the new lab instrument is a lemon or if the constant downtime is due to βuser errorβ.
Considering all the campuses that have this instrument keep calling service Iβd wager this model is just cheap shit.

a watercolor painting of three overlapping skulls with a crown of peonies. One unhinged jawbone has three peony buds growing within it.
After years of being asked about it, I am finally making an oracle deck. neat!
4) The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P DjΓ¨lΓ Clark. My current read! I do like it so far but Iβm not sure if itβs going to stick the landing. I went in pretty blind and itβs not quite what I expected.
3) Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. 5/5 stars! I really enjoyed this YA fantasy that managed to use a lot of the tropes and common plot points to create a story that felt fresh. I especially enjoyed the side plot romance and the complicated family/found family dynamics.
2) Blood Tribute by Vela Roth. 5/5 stars! Sometimes a novella with less than 100 pages struggles to convey a complete world and compelling characters. This story manages to pull it off and includes one of the best written vampire sex scenes Iβve ever read!
1) Yours Celestially by Al Hess. 5/5 stars! A wonderful queernorm cozy (ish) fantasy with deep characters that struggle with both the past and making a new future for themselves. It also features two sweet romances.
Youβre Celestially by Al Hess, cover with a faceless person in a suit with windows computer menus around them
Blood Tribute by Vela Roth, cover with a man and a woman. The man has a bloody mouth and the woman has a bite mark on her neck.
Raybearer by Jordan Jfueko. Cover with a gold border and a girl with golden jewelry.
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P Djeli Clark. Cover with a woman who had two knives and a face mask shaped like a cat.
I know Iβve been offline for some time (winter is always hard for me) but I thought Iβd update with some of my favorite reads this year so far and the one Iβm currently reading. π§΅
I usually make my goal significantly less than my average books per year. That way I hit it in like September and thereβs no pressure from missing weeks/months!

Reviews are free AND they are a gift to authors that can keep on giving (i.e., exposure, marketing, algo boosts, etc.)
Please, give the gift of reviews to your authors this holiday season. It really can make a difference!
Cover of Marie Cardnoβs book HOW TO GET A GIRLFRIEND (When Youβre a Terrifying Monster), featuring art of an eldritch being holding a bouquet of flowers in one of her tentacles.
Cover of Halli Starlingβs book COUP DE COEUR, which features a sort of still-life scene of a table covered in things such as flowers, a spool of thread, oyster shells, a pearl necklace, scissors stabbed into a pomegranate, and a still-smoking candle.
Cover of Tamara Jereeβs book A WOLF STEPS IN BLOOD, featuring art of a young Black woman with red eyes and short white hair, gently touching the muzzle of a wolf thatβs looking at her affectionately. The woman is wearing a leather jacket and a choker necklace, and her earlobes are gauged.
Cover of the book SEA SWALLOW ME by Craig Laurance Gidney, which features slightly abstract art of a Black manβs face pointed upward with a planet behind him and waves below him.
The Smashwords End of Year Sale is on, and the dauntingly long list can be hard to wade through (especially with all the gen AI these days). Iβve curated a list of books I recommend or am interested in, all AI free to the best of my ability, and all under $3! ππ

An itty bitty painting of Elspeth, the planeswalker from Magic: The Gathering, as a white mouse clad in silver armor with golden decorations. She's wearing a white cape and holding a spear that took more than one try to get to look right. Behind her, white sweet peas are arranged in the shape of wings (because Elspeth is an angel) and she's making friends with an orange butterfly. This is on the back of my Swords to Plowshares artist proof, which also involves sweet peas. Pencil for scale!
I think today is a good day to share my second piece for the Magic: The Gathering in Miniature III exhibition that'll be in Gallery Nucleus Jan 31 - Feb 15, 2026:
