Good to hear @fleuranderson.bsky.social at the @environmentappg.bsky.social event on the Global Oceans Treaty emphasise cross-party support for action: βThe ocean does not recognise political divisions & nor should we in our ambitions for it.β
π @oceansandy.bsky.social from @mcsuk.bsky.social reminded us that widespread public backing was central to the Treatyβs success, and that working closely with communities will be vital to strengthening marine protection in the years ahead π€
Kaleem Luthra from @ejfoundation.org warned of the damage caused by Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing - the third most lucrative illicit natural-resource crime
But thereβs cause for hope - governments showed whatβs possible by coming together around the High Seas Treatyπ
π The Minister emphasised that the BBNJ marks the start of a new phase of collective responsibility for our oceans. She noted the government is now working at pace to deliver the secondary legislation needed to implement the Bill π
π Environment APPG Chair @fleuranderson.bsky.social urged the UK to maintain momentum to complete ratification of the Global Ocean Treaty.
With 94% of global fish stocks depleted, a ban on domestic bottom trawling is vital to protect our oceans and fishing industry in the long-termπ
πOn Monday evening we celebrated the passing of the High Seas Treaty with a receptionπ
Joined by a fantastic line-up of speakers and Minister for Water & Flooding @emmahardymp.bsky.social, we celebrated the Treaty as a landmark act that will protect two-thirds of the worldβs oceansπ
βοΈDuring last Tuesday's debate on the flooding from Storm Chandra, APPG member @martinwrigley.bsky.social highlighted how three storms is not an anomaly but a pattern.
Government funding is needed so communities are able to deal with the aftermath. βοΈ
Pleased to hear @sarahdykeld.bsky.social highlight that recent floods are a symptom of climate change, citing the Environment Agencyβs projection of a 90% rise in properties at risk from river and coastal flooding by the 2080s #floodingππ§οΈ
Weβre supporting The Big Plastic Count!
From 9-15 March, thousands of people will be counting all the plastic packaging they throw away for one week.
Calling all MPs: we're asking you to encourage your local schools to take part and to set up a visit (please DM us for support + materials).
We welcome Minister Seema Malhotra highlighting the UKβs responsibility to protect marine ecosystems and support sustainable development.
We now hope the government will swiftly pass and implement the #BBNJBill ππ
π During last Monday's reading of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Bill, @rozsavage.bsky.social discussed the importance of protecting our local marine environment and working with different countries to end destructive practices like bottom trawling π #BBNJBill
π We need to invest in flood protection now and only build in areas that meet the highest standards if we are to avoid situations like this becoming the norm π§οΈ

π The UK is clearly underprepared for the scale of climate impacts π§οΈ
Waiting until the next National Adaptation Programme in 2028 is insufficient and the APPG will be campaigning to make the UK more resilient to climate change.

π³ On board Witness, Greenpeaceβs newest vessel, while she was docked in London! π
As Chair of the @environmentappg.bsky.social, it was inspiring to hear from the crew about how this ship saves whales by exposing industrial fishing boats who sneak into protected global marine areas
This week, Govt quietly published a 'Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security assessment' after an FOI forced their hand.
It is a deeply concerning read for anyone who cares about our future.
π On 17 January, the #HighSeasTreaty will enter into force in a major step for ocean protection.
It will enable:
π Legal frameworks for MPAs
π Environmental impact assessments
π€ An Ocean COP
Next up: swift progress on the UKβs BBNJ Bill is needed to implement these commitments.
1οΈβ£step down, 5οΈβ£ to go in the Circular Economy Growth Plan:
Cut the cost of living
Build up skills
Deliver roadmaps for key sectors
Get investment into circular innovation
Set the UK on a path to βone-planetβ resource use
@adrianramsay.bsky.social @afzalkhanmcr.bsky.social @umakumaran.bsky.social
Minister @chrismcdonaldmp.bsky.social has taken a major step forward with Vision 2035, recognising that minerals in the UKβs products and infrastructure are as important as those still in the ground.
The Strategy aims for 20% of total annual UK demand to be met through recycling by 2035.
Earlier this year we set out six steps to kickstart the circular economy.
Critical minerals are an obvious step: they are crucial for resilience, the UKβs geological reserves are highly limited, and their supply chains are often destructive.
@werahobhouse.org.uk @orecatapult.bsky.social
Abtisam Mohamed MP highlighted the need for the UK to move more quickly away from reliance on oil and gas β½- especially as the four biggest banks continue to finance major polluters and the drilling licence for Rosebank has still not been rejected
@alexsobel.co.uk asked what more the UK Government can do to ensure that London and the UKβs global finance drives natural capital investment worldwide π- including through Article 6, the mechanism enabling international carbon markets and cooperation on emissions reductions β»οΈ
At last week's COP30 debate, @pippaheylings.bsky.social reminded us that COP30 was the first climate summit to be held since the world surpassed 1.5Β°C of warming π‘οΈ
This has driven more extreme weather events βοΈ, threatened crop yields and incomesπΎand put our local environments at risk π
Thank you to our speakers @umakumaran.bsky.social, Shazia Arshad from Islamic Relief, Thomas Pickford from @nature.org, Sofia Ali from Green Deen Tribe - and thanks to @afzalkhanmcr.bsky.social for chairing the discussion!
πHuge thanks to @islamicreliefuk.bsky.social for hosting yesterdayβs panel event with us!π
Speakers explored how the Global South bears the brunt of climate change despite being least responsible, the urgent need for renewed UK climate finance, and more
π’New Chair elected for the Environment APPG π’
We're delighted to announce @fleuranderson.bsky.social as our new Chair! Fleur brings a range of interest and experience to the role, including leading the charge to ban plastic in wet wipes β»οΈ
Weβre excited to work with Fleur on the APPG!
Thanks to @eciu.net and @wellcometrust.bsky.social for organising, and also to our fellow co-hosts @lcefuk.bsky.social, Conservative Environment Network, @ldnc-uk.bsky.social, @climateappg.bsky.social and @peersfortheplanet.bsky.social
Last night we celebrated ten years of the Paris Agreement ahead of COP30 π
Alongside cross-party politicians, we recognised the UK's climate leadership and the role all parties have played on this agenda
Fantastic to hear from @katiewhitemp.bsky.social, Lord Deben and @pippaheylings.bsky.social
Katie White speaks at podium
"We need to show rather than tell that clean energy and climate action will make lives better"
Climate Minister @katiewhitemp.bsky.social promotes optimism ahead of COP30
She says the UK's NDC is "incredibly ambitious" and notes further announcements are to come
Lord Deben speaks at lecturn
"Doing it together is what it is all about"
Former CCC Chair and Environment Minister Lord Deben tells us we must bring everyone along with environmental action and remember our responsibility to the rest of the world
