oh wow
Profoundly eloquent... and necessary.
My father, my sweet Daddy, passed away on Tuesday.
Devastated doesn't even begin to describe it.

Please do. It makes the world a better place. Seriously.
This is helpful.
May his memory be for a blessing. In case itβs helpful, in Yiddish, losing even one parent makes one an orphan. Itβs a different worldview than in our current culture.
I still don't understand. What am I supposed to do now!
Anyway. Thank you all.
The best way I can honor my father is to keep teaching and writing -- and to be free.
Which means teaching banned and challenged subjects without fear.
For those who want to help support, contributions are always appreciated

So I really was my father's daughter. I guess I know where I get it from.
He was a journalist and editor this whole time, watching me throughout my career--- and he only told me in the last months of his life.
I'll be forever grateful that he told me this before he passed.
Before his passing on Tuesday, my dad nearly died in August, but he rallied back.
He told me he was a journalist. I had never known that before. That he had been kicked out of school in Ghana for writing articles that angered the school leaders.

"there is no special title for adults who lose their parentsβ there is no sympathetic status change for us. People who lose spouses are widows. Children who lose both parents are orphans. Adults who lose parentsβ well thats just being an adult, good luck, suck it up."
Rarely say this, but stop what you're doing and read this. Powerful words. Thank you for sharing. My wife lost both her parents in her late 20s and there's just so little resources for, as you said perfectly, just being an adult.
βYou donβt belong to Mommy or me. We donβt own you. You belong to the universe. You just came through us.β
Literally brought to tears.
How fortunate you were raised by such wisdom.
A loss this great means we never fully recover but indicates a love truly few ever know. My heart breaks for you.
Ha, yes! The extraction mission from Ghana before the borders closed during covid.
My dad was in Ghana, and we managed to coordinate him getting on a State Dept flight out before the borders closed to commercial travel...

Having just lost my father, this really got me π
Aw man π
As a Daddyβs girl myself, I felt this on a deep level and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost a parent πβ€οΈ
Some people asked how they can help/support me.
My dad really loved books, education, and learning. So this year, I'm going to continue teaching, and leading @resistanceschool.bsky.social in his honor.
Contributions to our work helps a lot.

"He sipped his tea. βYou donβt belong to Mommy or me. We donβt own you. You belong to the universe. You just came through us.β It was one of the most profound things anyone has ever said to me."
Also sharing that your article resonated with me so deeply. Not the incredible father part (this quote!). I don't have that. But as a strong single woman born of immigrant parents. In your lowest moment, sharing your vulnerability, you touched someone else who feels a little less lonely. Thank you β₯οΈ
This is a heartfelt testament of what a loving father can do for their daughter(s).
I saw many glimpses of my own father here and all I can do is encourage people to read this love letter.
Grief has such a strange way to bring complete strangers together.
Un fuerte abrazo, Karen. β¨
